Description
A rare 1968 LP donated to our rescue animal charity shop by a kind benefactor. Will be sent special delivery and well protected as an irreplaceable item. Has been played by myself and I consider the record to be in excellent condition although the outer sleeve sadly is not. This is one of the finest underground singer-songwriter albums of its era, blending expert acoustic guitar with jazzy backings from some of Britain's leading contemporary musicians and psychedelic lyrics. It is almost impossible to find in is original incarnation hence the high starting price. Although Marc Brierley had released an EP on Transatlantic in 1966, 'Welcome to the Citadel' was his first LP. It was an accomplished yet rather bland work, built around Brierley's singing, song writing and acoustic guitar. It was pushed towards folk-rock and pop by the use of bass and drums with the help of Tony Reeves and Mike Travis who had just been touring with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers plus some cello, trumpet and violins. It is on the mild twee side of British folk-rock the slight vocals and drifting compositional sense fall into the realm of other minor British singer/song writers of the genre like Keith Christmas. The 'Matchbox Men' track and title track have an attractive but forgettable baroque-folk flavour while 'Take Me for a Ride on Your Airplane' seems a little like forced attempts at getting an electric Bert Jansch type sound. The more acoustic numbers are very Donovanish and very '60's. I like it!
