Description

WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND
Rare Original Poster for 1967 LA Teenage Fair designed by renowned artist Roland Crump

This is a VERY RARE, ORIGINAL and HIGHLY UNUSUAL poster measuring approx. 26 inches by 40 inches, printed on thick, heavy bonded paper and in incredible condition for its age - a mere 44 years!

This poster has clearly been well-stored - there are no folds, no tears, no pin holes and the bare minimum of very light creases around the edge. There is also a little browning towards the very edge which will not be visible once the poster is framed. There is absolutely no doubt from its appearance (and slight odour) that this is an original.

In the early 60s Roland Crump had already designed the goofy-but-hip teenager for Bob Markley's Fifo label 45s. During the mid-60s Crump also turned out a series of satirical posters poking gentle fun at the prevailing drug culture which, with a certain irony, sold mainly to teenagers through 'head' shops!

By 1967 Crump must have crossed paths with Bob Markley once again because he was prevailed upon to design this huge poster for Bob's new group the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Unusually the poster combined a selection of spoof adverts for drugs on the left hand side, with a unique Japanese-themed design on the right. Note that the Samurai is subtly 'giving the finger'... I understand from Bob Yeazel, who played with the group during their live gigs that summer, that the poster was designed for the Teenage Fair at which they performed.

Given the similar calligraphy I also have a theory that Crump may have been responsible for the artwork on the rear of the WCPAEB's second Reprise LP Volume II. He later went on to design rides for Disneyland.

All posters will be posted in sturdy cardboard tubes.

I have written extensively on the WCPAEB, including sleeve notes for the Sundazed reissues and other reissues, articles for Shindig, etc.
Key Words: Los Angeles LA Teenage Fair Drugs Counter Culture Psychedelic Rock
