What A Way To Die
Wow, another great one! This one dominated primarily by the absolutely god-like cover shot of Richard and the Young Lions. Richard having the longest hair anyone in New Jersey had ever seen, sports the end product of his yearlong absence from the barber's chair. Truly amazing, yet there's more - the songs!
Side One opens with a classic girl punk ditty by the Pleasure Seekers, "What A Way To Die." "That's When Happiness Began" by the Grains Of Sand is perhaps the best version of that song, real groovy. Better still though, and a personal fave, is "I'm Gone" by the Magic Mushroom - completely and utterly wyld! Raving harp intro and solo, great chord changes and ultra-boss vocals make this one a real stomper. "Leave Me Alone" by the Knaves is a truly demented R&B number with real stupid words, and speaking of demented R&B, the Renegades from Scandinavia do a simply evil version of "13 Women" - deathly fuzztone guitar and hellishly piercing organ!
Side Two is equally crunching, with "You Can Make It" by Richard and the Young Lions, so great it defies description. Fuzz guitar, fuzz vocals (Richard!), and groovy bells on the chorus. How cool! Another standout on Side Two is "My Iconoclastic Life" by the Beech-Nuts, the ultimate example of teen lycanthropy, these guys were definitely lost! "Do You Have To Ask" by the Swingin' Machine is another fave. Great tortured singer, and absolutely wild guitar. Also on Side Two is a real boss cover of "Evil Hearted You" (sounds like Keith Relf!) by the Human Beingz, and a quite un-Stones-like cover of "Empty Heart" by the First Four.
So all that means this one's real gone, definitely one of the best of the recent onslaught of compilations. If you only buy four comps this year, let this be one of them. Just look for the hairy cover!- Bill Calhoun (Originally published in Ugly Things #3, 1984)
