Description :
Here is a quite reasonable copy of the obscenely hard to find debut & custom pressed ( Limited No.'s ) single from late 60's prog-psych rock / garage band The Wright Of Waye.
This mega-rare 45 is one of those much sought after items that you hear about but never see … nor does anyone you know ever chanced upon it either for that matter.
The Wright Of Waye only ever released two singles, both in 1968, before disappearing from view. The band came to fruition following line-up changes within two previous notorious Sydney-based R'n'B groups RICHARD WRIGHT GROUP (1966) and THE WRIGHT GROUP (1967)… the common denominator in all three bands were John Jones (ex-Mystics and Missing Links guitarist ) and Gary McDonald. John Jones actually shared guitar duties with Doug Ford on the unquestionably holy-grail of Aussie rock artifacts The MISSING LINKS album and equally sought after EP "The Links Unchained".
The A-side "Penelope Play " is an up-tempo freak-beat effort with sonic guitar and a trippy 60s sound that may have received minimal air-play at best if only for it's catchy drone-like chorus. The more I hear it I recall some of The Move's flower-power efforts … the car horns / traffic chaos experiment towards the fade-out makes for interest as well. Not all that bad really but really only serves to whet your appetite for the sleeper flip-side.
The B-side "You Can't Do It Alone" is the real killer here. Bursting with fuzz-driven guitar licks that simply oozes that 'once in awhile feeling' and sends your head-spinning as you exclaim " Geez, how good is this ??!!". From the sensational opening crescendo you know you're in for a special trip with Keith Moon like drumming and a continuing lead-riff winding in ,out and around almost dead-pan vocals that suit the song down to a T. Saving the best for last it cashes in with brief bass and lead solos before a triple feed-back finish …. awesomely good stuff that stands your hair on end whilst the superlatives flow. What did a mate of mine ( and keen prog-psych rock fan ) enthuse when I played it to him recently ??… the grin widened with each passing beat along with an appreciative yelp " What a cracker !! …who are these guys again ?"
All in all a an absolute ripper of a single that will no doubt generate heaps of interest…. and deservedly so.

( Note : This record was play-tested before grading. Having collected vinyl on and off for 30 odd years you can be assured that I grade accurately, if not a touch conservatively.)
Vinyl ~ What I wouldn't give to say the condition was on a par with the music ….unfortunately this is not the case however it is far from a wash-out. Visually it has seen better days … and there is no argument about that. The good news is that they are only surface scuffs, no divots, and my educated guess is that it simply has not been stored within a sleeve for many a year. Give it a spin though and Yahoo!! It grooves along sweet-as with no over intrusive clicks … certainly no pops to be concerned about and definitely no skips whatsoever. What little lead-in hiss there is drowned-out by the first bar and the rest is almost pure-bliss. Luckily it hasn't been played a lot either which isn't that surprising as this little gem would've been an acquired taste to only a few which leads to, in my view, a grading play-wise of VG at the least that will certainly not disappoint.
Labels ~ Both labels further support the view of being lightly played as there are no spindle marks and a generally clean appearance.
Sleeve ~ Being a custom pressed single it was never issued in a company sleeve and I have included an excellent factory jacket to house this beauty.
