Ranked in the mother of all coffee table books 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, while also appearing on numerous greatest albums of all time lists (both punk and general), the debut full-length from London punk heroes X-Ray Spex only continues to get better with age, like a new wave fine wine. Originally released in 1978, Germfree Adolescents heralded a limitless expansion for the scene, crafting iconic hits such as 'Let's Submerge', 'Identity' and 'I Live Off You', which sonically illustrated the genre morphing into post-punk and new wave in real time. Fronted by the incomparable Poly Styrene, may she rest in iconography, their legacy can be felt all the way from riot grrrl legends Bikini Kill to punk anti-royalty NOFX who have frequently covered the record's title-track at live shows. Even when the Spex reunited for one fateful night on 6 September 2008 to perform the album in full at the Camden Roundhouse, those in the crowd included The Slits bassist Tessa Pollitt, Chrissy Boy of Madness and Eater drummer Dee Generate, while a more leftfield and current testament comes from experimental pop artist FKA Twigs who has cited the record as her all time favourite.
