LP condition:
Vinyl: vg+ (some light unfeelable scuffs)
Cover: vg+ (some wrinkles and dents) description:
Rare original gorgeous reflective silver cover issue (one of the most beautiful 3d covers of the whole Prospective 21e siecle series) of this experimental percussion work performed by Les Percussions De Strasbourg and named for a Greek goddess, inspired by the mathematics of the cycles of the cosmos and by the mythological sounds described as the "thunder of the gods." It features a new percussion instrument invented by the composer called Simantra, made out of metal and wood and inspired by ancient Greek instruments. According to Xenakis' notes, "The piece exploits in a new manner the Screen Theory or the logical functions of residue classes modulo m, together with space-sound kinematics." This record is part of the great Philips silver cover series of experimental music that issued legendary recordings by Gilbert Amy, Pierre Henry, Arne Nordheim, Francois Bayle, Bernard Parmegiani, Dubravko Detoni, Luc Ferrari, Ivo Malec, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Luciano Beri, Francis Miroglio, etc.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Xenakis was a Greek architect and composer who worked with Le Corbusier and brought the mathematics and logic of engineering into his "stochastic" music; he studied under Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, and Olivier Messiaen, was influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, worked with Pierre Schaeffer (at the INA-GRM studios), Lukas Foss, and Pierre Boulez, and is associated with fellow eastern europeans Gyorgy Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. • The Percussions of Strasbourg specialize in performing the music of Messiaen, Xenakis, Stockhausen, Serocki, Aperghis, Ballif, John Cage, Dufourt, Kabelac, Francois Bernard Mache, Edgard Varese, and Donatoni.
