This an auction for Tori Amos' classically disastrous debut release on LP. Under the guise of a band called "Y Kant Tori Read", the future "red-haired girl with the piano" birthed the idea as far as back 1984, which went through a variety of member changes throughout the next few years, landed a record deal with Atlantic and finally released a record in early 1988 - nearly half a decade after the sonic material had lost its relevance.
The LP (along with CDs and cassettes, ALL long out of print) endured the most brutal abuse at the hands of Atlantic Records in their desperate attempt to erase the memory of such a commercial failure. The album went through one single pressing of 15,000-20,000 copies, very little of which were purchased at all when the album dropped. Not helped by dismal reviews, most notably Billboard's infamous "bimbo music" lashing.
This resulted in Atlantic Records' decision to cease promotion entirely on Y Kant Tori Read after only a few weeks, beginning what would become a scathing example of the "cut-out" release process.
That process created the ultimate Tori Amos collector's challenge as the LP endured a variety of stages: The highest-sought format of this LP to date is the original, factory-sealed copy with the hype sticker placed on the outside with absolutely NO discount clips to the spine whatsoever. This means theoretically that the album was purchased brand-new somewhere around the time of its release...and simply never opened.
The second format is quite simple: The commercial copy of the LP was clipped in-store on the spine for discount sale, the factory-wrapped seal was retained - though now slightly punctured - and the hype sticker remained untouched on the front of the album. Also, theoretically, to be purchased and never opened. ***THIS is the format of the LP for THIS AUCTION.***
The third format is, by far, the saddest as Atlantic Records was forced to retain all remaining copies that did not find new owners via discount sales, rip off the original factory seal from the LPs to clip their spines, affix brand-new (leftover) hype stickers directly onto the sleeve and then stamp on the back the most infamous identifier of all its abuse: the gold promotional stamp.
The promotional stamp was purely Atlantic's final, exhaustive effort to sell off the remaining copies as "promo" records, hyping up a value that was already indignantly stripped by Atlantic itself. This also caused the problem for those seeking the original radio-owned promo copies as they were distributed in this very same manner but without the spin clip OR the factory seal.
**This copy placed for auction has retained its beautifully bright colors within the factory-sealed shrink-wrap, safely stored in a plastic LP sleeve.**
