NOTES ON THE CREATION: Close To The Edge may sound like the most carefully conceived of concept albums, but its creation owed more to chance and deft tape editing.
Yes’s method of working up new material at the time involved everyone playing live in the rehearsal studio until the music either ground to a halt or someone made a mistake. The band would then go back a few bars and start again. With the tapes rolling, Eddie Offord or the tape operator would be feverishly taking notes. Thus the title piece was patched together from possibly 30 or 40 edits. According to Rick Wakeman, the take of the closing session had to be retrieved from a dustbin full of tape after Offord, working all-night on the master, had spliced the wrong edit. “When we finally found the right section we were horrified because the sound did not match, there was lots more echo,” Wakeman recalls. “But after a few listens it seemed to work, sort of opened the music out, so we reproduced it live.”
For all the “amateurism and shamateurism” that Brufford, the soon to depart drummer later complained of, Close To The Edge still holds together impressively as a work of sustained creativity and inspired playing.

Today, the title track stands as a landmark prog concept masterpiece which is arguably, unrivaled

Cover Description / Condition: Fully textured matt gatefold sleeve, designed by Roger Dean. Textured both outside and inside with a matt leather - like finish.
Unlike most copies of this sleeve, this one does not suffer from any of the usual surface rubbing and is beautifully clean and unmarked - the inside painting is especially stunning. There is very little wear to the edges and only the slightest of corner 'bumping'. A superb copy. EXCELLENT+

Inner Sleeve Description / Condition: Green Lyric Inner. This original 1st press inner is made of a thinner paper and is more delicate than later issues. It also has perfectly square edges unlike later issues which have a semi circular notch on the opening edge. Another different feature of the first issue is the omission of printers credits underneath the catalogue number (see pic).
Unfortunately the inner suffers from a 9cm split to one edge but is otherwise, clean and unmarked. VERY GOOD

Label Description/Condition: The orange colour of the first press labels is a darker, more brick red than later pressings.
Clean and bright. There are some spindle markings evident when angled under a bright light. EXCELLENT

Vinyl Condition:
Visual: A couple of superficial surface marks, mostly the kind resulting from taking the LP out of its inner but the surfaces still retain their beautiful deep gloss. EXCELLENT
Audio: There is a small hairline scratch which clicks quietly for about a minute on the quiet middle section of "Close To The Edge". It is not one of those loud, obtrusive clicks but nevertheless, needs to be mentioned. Otherwise, Side One plays perfectly and sounds SUPERB. Side Two plays perfectly with just the smallest touch of surface noise evident on the quiet ending of "And You And I" but this really is very minor. I would therefore grade the audio as an overall EXCELLENT.
