Close to the Edge, Yes's follow-up to the 1971 smash album Fragile, has been called the greatest progressive rock album of all time, and with good reason. Although Yes had a tough act to follow, they delivered an essentially superior record less than one year later. Indeed, this is their magnum opus.

At a length of just under 38 minutes, Close to the Edge is vast, yet it is comprised of only three tracks. Delicate textures of acoustic guitar and keyboards, punctuated by thoughtful drumming and blistering bass lines, populate these intricate arrangements. Lead singer Jon Anderson's high-pitched and ethereal voice soars above it all. The main attraction is the side-long title track, which represents the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of everything that Yes worked toward over the previous five years.

In the enormous output of a band that has been active for forty years, Close to the Edge represents the ultimate in musical creation. This timeless classic transcends genre clichés and is a wonderful addition to any record collection.

Yes are widely acknowledged as the godfathers of progressive rock, and have been at the top of the genre for decades. In 1971, they released their fourth album, Fragile, which deservedly garnered widespread critical acclaim, and the Top 20 smash "Roundabout" boosted sales to multiplatinum. This album also noteworthy as it was the debut of Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and the first time that Roger Dean's instantly recognizable artwork graced the cover of a Yes album. 

The album is a perennial seller, and tracks such as "Heart of the Sunrise" and "Long Distance Runaround" are permanent fixtures in the band's live show.
