Brief Info: A hugely expansive double set with just four tracks. It received mixed reviews by critics of the day and even some Yes fans thought it pushed the boundaries of progressive rock a little too far – it even divided the band with Wakeman well-documented as being less than delighted with it. But when it came to selling, few had many reservations and this sold well. Virtuoso musicianship from some of rock’s finest, Howe has claimed some of his best guitar work is featured on this set. Beautifully recorded and personally I think it’s under-appreciated, side one’s ‘The Ancient’ is simply superb but I like all four sides – long tracks to get the mind and senses around. Whichever side of the Yes fence you lay, this copy looks barely played and sounds superb with little to fault. Yes fans, new and old, enjoy this album for what it is, a highly original prog gem.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes original plain unlined inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Superb Roger Dean artwork seen here to almost maximum advantage on a hardly worn, rubbed or aged front. There is a trace of a sticker removal mark near the top right in the form of a darkened outline, but look hard. No surface damage or pulling marks. Very fresh looking with just a fine crease near the spine centre.

Cover Back: The back is even better with little to fault, the lack of ringwear each side being major positives.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again impressive: a possible trace of rubbing near the bottom left, but more likely in manufacture.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and barely rubbed at all.

Bottom Edges: As above with just very small tip rubs to right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly very sharp with minimal hint of thickening, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, barely compressed and folded square, so all edges meet up very closely and parallel. The arwork shows minimal traces of any wear, no text was printed on this one.

Corners: Light tip rubs to bottom right, little else with no knocks or dinks. Excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite wear-prone and unforgiving 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors and yet another wonderful Roger Dean picturescape.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): one has a small tear to one top edge. A matching unlined pair, gently aged with a little crinkle, but no hard creasing. All closed edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / MINT(-): with one surface mark on side two at the beginning with no sound. That blemish apart, both playing surfaces are superb and appear hardly played. Two lovely fresh records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to and even exceed their high visual gradings with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no tracking issues*, overall exceptional clean pressings for a fairly challenging album. Few copies will outperform this quality UK pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The odd gentle tick is nigh-on impossible to avoid on such albums that do have quiet passages, but nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these beautifully recorded and produced records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
