Label Conditions: Two superb examples that are very clean, fresh and very attractive. Any of the tiny few spindle traces are very light, small and faint and only show under angled light. This very impressive record looks very little played, and with utmost care – and sounds fantastic.

Cat Number: 2400101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good solid weight, and above average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a very early pressing, and they rarely get seen much earlier than this. A popular prog-rock album and those who bought it initially, usually played it heavily. The unprotected cover is well-known for wear and damage, this is also a strong example.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and the one that got them really noticed. A highly popular set within the progressive rock genre and it justifiably sold well. Hence finding Plum copies is far from impossible but conditions are always a major factor. Highly gifted musicians and complex music does not tolerate old worn stylus abuse and this includes some very quiet passages. A pre-Rick Wakeman album, the keys were taken by Tony Kaye, who subsequently left before the ‘Fragile’ classic. This one of the earliest pressings I have seen, appears very little played and offers superb sound quality. The cover is equally fragile and this one of the better ones I have seen for some time. The inner sleeve which is date coded 0371 (March 1971), within a month of issue, also in very fine, and modestly aged condition. For those needing a very early-pressed and lightly used copy of this prog classic, this could fit the bill nicely.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being very critical on an uncompromising wear-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces and original 2400101 number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill. Includes the original inner March 71 date-coded inner sleeve (seen in close-up), only a month later than the issue of release being February.

Cover Front: This looks very impressive indeed with any rubbing just confined to the spine tip ends. Also only one fine edge crease with any marks or blemishes few and very faint seen very critically under angled light. Rich deep colour and a high degree of freshness with no price sticker marks that often blight this intolerant surface. This will take a lot of beating.

Cover Back: All very similar with just a small few fine surface marks seen under light. The lack of ring wear is unusual and most welcome. Overall, both front and back are quite exceptional given some I have seen over the years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with barely anything to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight and solid, there appears little wear, possibly to odd tiny tip-in – the owner was very fussy on appearance it seems.

Bottom Edges: A little light patchy rubbing, minimal in terms of this one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean and sharp with minimal traces of wear with barely a hint of any thickening or burring. Record enters on the back edge, both untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression or wear. All text is nigh-on perfect and there appears no evidence of any enhancements to the black surface. This also folded squarely, so the edges meet up near flush and parallel, this makes a big difference for the more discerning.

Corners: Mostly light to moderate tip and corner rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find a great deal better. I think my grading is being very conservative really and an extra (+) I feel justified. With the main areas in very strong and little-worn condition, this attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and only marked down for the usual seam adhesive darkening and mild ageing. This a Polydor style polylined inner with the 0371 (March 1971) date-code, the month of issue being February, so this dates this copy well and one of the earliest made (reitterated by the matrix and stampers seen further up). Both window circles are ultra crisp and neat, the lining is solid and very clear with minimal crinkle. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and actually tempted to grade full Mint(-), with two nigh-on immaculate playing surfaces (and labels). Any surface traces less than minuscule, even viewed up close under bright angled light, this one of the best I have seen for some time. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that appears hardly played – reitterated by top quality sound – this on a popular progressive giant of an album now into it’s forty-second year. This record should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – and what a pleasure it was to do so. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-classic plays even above it’s very high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, top quality sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is almost audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A high fidelity recording from a band, even in the early days, who cared about quality with complex music from way above average rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. Devoid of pops or clicks and any surface sound traces minuscule. These progressive albums always have quiet passages so absolute silence is a very tough ask, but this very well pressed copy gives of it’s very best, this too played on very sensitive equipment. Few very early examples will better this I feel sure. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and sharp. Just listen to the acoustic guitar solo ‘The Clap’, every chord change can be heard with precision and clarity. Nothing spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Do not underestimate how difficult this one is to find in such fine all-round condition, one that merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
