Although there are some period trappings and the use of a vocal group (the Sweet Inspirations) on a few selections, the music sounds fairly fresh and its diversity (ranging from exotic vamps to the adventurous seven-movement* "Symphonic Blues Suite") is a major strength. Lateef's willingness to take chances with his highly individual sound on his instruments (tenor, flute, oboe, and his rare outing on soprano), and the impressive amount of variety makes this a recommended set. * The near nineteen minute suite on side two was recorded with The Cologne (Germany) Radio Orchestra conducted by William S. Fisher. An electrifying experience!
