Some info on the release: Original jugoslavian pressing from the 70's on the Jugoton label (that released also the works of Acezantez, Dubravko Detoni and others)!! This is part of a documentation in 4 parts of the Zagreb Biennale back from 1975, one of the most important art events in ex-Jugoslavia, which was associated also with a "new music" festival presented in this record. See my other auctions for another volume of the same series.

A beautiful mix of avant-garde and experimental works. Rajko Maksimovic's piece is based on haiku from japanese poets. Vojin Komadina's piece is researching aleatorics (chance operations) in music, while the Ruben Radica piece refers to Spinoza & thepossible attributes of infinite substance, limits of the possible from the point of view of sound. Plus a lot more to discover!! Be warned, you don't see this one offered every day, don't let it get away!! 

Ruben Radica is one of the most interesting of Croatian contemporary composers. His grandfather, Josip Hatze, also a distinguished composer, taught him the basics of music. In total harmony with his time, Ruben Radica has renounced every kind of eclecticism and focuses on the present and the future. Enriched by the knowledge and experience acquired while working with Leibowitz, he became involved in the radical research of sound and, simultaneously, in the search for his own artistic idiom. His first compositions were subtly marked by tonal relationships; he then became interested in dodecaphony, while his later works are based on the structuralist principle. Since his first internationally recognised piece, Lyrical Variations, performed in London in 1962, Ruben Radica has been developing an original and exceptionally coherent creative approach. It is characterised by a tendency to synthesise horizontal and vertical musical ideas, particularly apparent in the author's more recent compositions. Ruben Radica composes primarily for instrumental, mostly chamber, ensembles and orchestras of various sizes and unusual structures. Even when composing for the established kind of ensemble, his work sounds fresh and avant-garde. For example, his early compositions, Concerto for Chamber Orchestra (1956), Concerto Grosso (1957) and Four Dramatic Epigrams (1959) started in the traditional way, yet indicated a tendency to blend the vertical and the horizontal musical idea. Together with Berislav Sipius, Ivo Malec, Erno Kiraly, Marko Ruzdjak, Frano Parac and Stanko Horvat he's considered between the most important composers of ex-Jugoslavia. The traditional ensemble is also the starting point for Interference 19 and 10 (1965), a piece for narrator, choir and orchestra inspired by the stories of mental patients, but the work introduced a genuinely new quality of sound, the result of a new technique in the treatment of the orchestra, and particularly of the choir. This sound also emerged from the importance attributed by Ruben Radica, a relatively new development at this time, to the phenomenon of the tone colour. Radica's motives for involving such a variety of instrumental ensembles in his compositions can partly be explained by his fondness for combining tone colours and for searching for entirely new relationships among particular instruments and instrumental groups or simply among different parts of the score. One of the composer's highest achievements is Extensio for Piano and Orchestra (1973) which combines a particular kind of ascetic concentration on musical material and a rich variety of sound states featuring an original application of different timbres. Belongs to the great avant-garde/experimental composers "wave" that appeared in Europe in the 60's/70's/80's with main representators composers Hans Werner Henze, Pierre Boulez, Wolfgang Rihm, Helmut Lachenmann and Mauricio Kagel, Bruno Maderna, Henri Pousseur or more widely Bernd Alois Zimmermann, John Cage and of course Pendercki. The work is composed of 12 interconnected sections which illustrate Radica's involvement in the problem of two possible attributes of infinite substance (Spinoza): extension, with its movements and its stillness, affects the man and his work in a continued line of events, while the other attribute of infinite substance, the attribute of thought, turns here into a means of examining the limits of the possible in terms of sound. This type of creativity reflects the true Radica, the contemplative and rational author whose works are based on a thoughtful distribution of material rationally contained within meticulous musical limits (Pausing, Per se II, etc.). Such an attitude is bound to result in the composer's introversion, but his recent works, The Passion (1981) for example, are characterised by outstandingly communicative features. 

Condition: Vinyl in mint- condition, it visually is super clean and looks unplayed, but it plays with slight crackle in the beggining of each side, while cover is a neutral (not original) and lies in mint condition!!
