Description

Frank Zappa - Zappa In New York
DiscReet/Warner Bros - K69204

1st pressing, uncensored version of the double Zappa live album, featuring Ray White, Eddie Jobson, Patrick O'Hearn, Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and a brass section that includes Randy & Michael Brecker, better known as the Brecker Brothers.

Features the later-censored track "Punky's Whips", listed on both cover and label. After the first print-run, this track was removed from the release entirely and all unsold copies were withdrawn. The reference to Punky Meadows in "Titties & Beer" was also removed. Warner Bros. Records considered this potentially litigious and made the changes with no consultation with Zappa, which soured their relationship forever. Zappa left the label as soon as he could following this action, less than 2 years later. Ironically, Punky Meadows had always been entirely happy with the track.

A1/B1/C1/D1 matrixes.
Sleeve is in mostly excellent condition with the one obvious exception being the sticker damage to the top right corner of the front cover, approx. 1cmx1cm. There are also 3 hairline folds to the spine visible from front cover ( and the spine itself has a fold line running all the way along it (pictured).

Inside the gatefold there is some darkening to the yellow print (pictured at top, but also at bottom), but no writing or tears of any kind.

The records come in matching, likely original paper sleeves that have no serious damage but the 2nd record sleeve is slightly stained with ringwear, visible in the picture (top record).

The records themselves are in excellent condition and sound outstanding, please check the clips below. Please note that this is the sound captured directly out of my phono preamp into a professional quality audio interface (RME Multiface II), recorded at 48kHz 32bit and presented to you at 48kHz 16bit without additional editing except a fade out at the end. What you hear is exactly what you get.

Hopefully it's audible through these clips, but the truth is that you haven't heard this album unless you've heard the original vinyl. The warmth and richness of the sound is significantly better than the CD releases currently available. This is a common problem in Zappa's catalogue and whilst recent releases of his very earliest albums have begun to rectify this, Zappa In New York CD masters remain unchanged since 1991. More information is available at the bible for Zappa collectors, The Frank Zappa Album Versions Guide.
