Zarathustra wurde 1969 in Hamburg gegründet. Sie bestand aus Ernst Herzner (Gesang), Wolfgang Reimer (Gitarre, Gesang und Percussion), Michael Just (Bass und Gesang), Klaus Werner (Orgel) und Wolfgang Behrmann (Schlagzeug).[1]

Die Band orientierte sich musikalisch sehr stark an ihren Vorbildern Uriah Heep und Deep Purple. Der Deep-Purple-Sound ließ sich vor allem im Orgelspiel von Klaus Werner vernehmen; Anleihen an Jon Lord sind nicht zu überhören. Ernst Herzners kräftiger Gesang war mit Uriah Heeps David Byron oder dem späteren Bernie Shaw vergleichbar.

Da sich die Band in Hamburg und Umgebung live bereits einen Namen gemacht hatte, konnte sie bei Metronome 1971 einen Plattenvertrag abschließen. Ihr einziges Album Zarathustra wurde 1972 veröffentlicht.[2] Nach der Veröffentlichung löste sich die Band im Herbst 1972 auf. Ernst Herzner kam 1985 als Sänger zu Novalis, mit denen er das Album Nach uns die Flut aufnahm.[3

]Zarathustra was founded in Hamburg in 1969. It consisted of Ernst Herzner (vocals), Wolfgang Reimer (guitar, vocals and percussion), Michael Just (bass and vocals), Klaus Werner (organ) and Wolfgang Behrmann (drums).[1]

Musically, the band was very much based on their role models Uriah Heep and Deep Purple. The deep purple sound could be heard above all in Klaus Werner's organ playing; Borrowings from Jon Lord are unmistakable. Ernst Herzner's powerful vocals were comparable to Uriah Heep's David Byron or later Bernie Shaw.

Since the band had already made a name for themselves live in Hamburg and the surrounding area, they were able to sign a record deal with Metronome in 1971. Their only album Zarathustra was released in 1972.[2] After the release, the band broke up in the fall of 1972. Ernst Herzner joined Novalis in 1985 as a singer, with whom he recorded the album Nach uns die Flut.[3]
