ZILCH FLETCHER -- Nobody's Dreamboat -- ex. rare, original 1977 U.S. album, DJ Promo only release (no stock copies exist apparently), still sealed/never opened in original shrink wrap. Astounding and almost completely-unknown monsterpiece of deranged Acid Blues-Psych that pretty much defines the whole DIY - Acid Archives - Outsider Music sensibility with psychotic, dirge-like songs about moldering corpses, termites, mole men, dinosaurs and bloody intestines, delivered in growling, howling echoed vocals and accompanied by stark acoustic guitar. Musical vision here is somewhat akin to Captain Beefheart, Zappa & The Mothers, The Fugs and Wild Man Fischer but with its own whacko lyrical genius; the longer you listen to it, the more you feel like you're trapped in some decaying fun-house in which there's no door marked "exit" ... "I'm pretty close to human," as Fletcher moans in one song. Sample lyrics from "Grandfather's Casket": "A tisket a tasket, They stole my grandfather’s casket / Just left me the headstone to read / Witches and bitches, They stole his best pair of britches / And just left him in there in his old underwear / Grandfather looks quite sickly, He’s got no meat on his bones ..." Or this, from the jawdropping album opener "The Ballad Of Bloody Guts": "So if you’re looking in the mirror, Remember who you really are / Without that beautiful skin on you wouldn’t get very far / And people would boo and hiss, And point their finger and say, 'What the hell is this??' / It’s just a bunch of bloody guts!!" The song climaxes, literally, with Fletcher shrieking "BLOODY GUTS!!!" at the top of his lungs, in case you missed the point. The song titles alone -- "Catatonic Stupid," "March Of The Green Salamanders," "Everyday Is Halloween To You" -- tell you what you're in for. This was apparently pressed up only as a DJ Promo release (why?? who knows!), which means no copies were ever commercially sold in stores and probably accounting for its near-total obscurity even among Acid Archives - Private Press fans. Although it was recorded in 1977, the musical sensibility sounds like late 1960's/early 1970's -- this would have made a good release on Zappa's Bizarre/Straight label in fact alongside The GTO's and Wild Man Fischer; nobody would've bought it back then but at least it would have seen the light of day. (This was apparently recorded at the legendary Capitol Records studio in Hollywood -- but even that gets mis-spelled on the back cover as "Capital.") Note also that the label lists "Zilch Fletcher -- From the Ninth Dimension" .... God only knows what happened in the other eight dimensions. See photos for track list.
