Review

I’d normally never add in something like (AKA Sasha Grey’s Band) to a review title but I felt doing so might bring a casual reader over and discover aTelecine. Sure, as an Avante Noise band, aTelecine is only going to be of interest a to a very small niche audience, but why not use all the tools available (like Sasha Grey’s name) to at least get this into the hands of that audience? Anyway enough of my rational to the review title and on to the actual review…

So I imagine most of you are pretty familiar with adult entertainer Sasha Grey… and while I’m sure you’re very familiar with her to a certain extent, there are probably a few things about her that you don’t know. I remember being caught off guard a few years back when I discovered just how much she loved experimental and Industrial music… this kind of caught me off guard because well I don’t generally expect Porn Stars to have a deep understanding and love for Throbbing Gristle. Yeah, while I’m sure a good chunk of the gals over at Burning Angel and Suicide Girls may love them some Social D and The Melvins, but Throbbing Gristle? Have you ever met die hard Throbbing Gristle fans? Most of them look nothing like Sasha Grey let alone get to work with Current 93. But my girlfriend pointed out that when you really took Grey’s personality into account was her attitude towards adult entertainment all that different than Cosey Fanni Tutti’s performance work with Coum Transmisions and TG? When I thought about it in that regard, it really made much more sense because Sasha Grey really isn’t really your typical adult entertainer… never was and never will be.

So Sasha along with Pablo St. Francis and Anthony Djuan make up the trio that is aTelecine who are very much as they’re press releases describe… “art come to life.”  …And Six Dark Hours Pass is the group’s first full length was composed mainly with tape loops and minimal synth compositions. Now I’m a sucker for tape loops, so this album was like topping off a fillet Mignon with some chocolate souffle for desert. And whether this sort of thing is up your alley or not, …And Six Dark Hours Pass has an uncanny ability of sucking you into it’s space, an intimate confessional with the band where thoughts and ideas flutter in and out. Even as a fan of experimental releases, I’ll be honest it’s sometimes a chore to get “into” what’s going on. Not here, …And Six Dark Hours Pass while dark, is also light and airy. It never invades your space but merely seeks to becomes one with it and you.

I particularly loved “Sky Then Trees Then Birds Then Nothing” which reminded me of a darker, twisted offshoot of something you might have heard on Angelo Badalamenti’s score for Twin Peaks. While the almost humorous nature of the tape looped strings, horns and audio amongst the static in “Armour (Cut)” brought a much appreciated levity that most experimental releases tend to forgo.

aTelecine  is clearly not for everyone but those of you who enjoy forays into avante atmospheres where you don’t mind challenging your ears a bit with mood instead of melody  …And Six Dark Hours Pass is a treat into the sometimes stagnate world of experimental music that far surpasses the initial novelty.
