play grades solid m- (played on thorens td 520 w/ shure V15Vx). only record as a leader by cleveland-born alto saxist jones who plays on frank wright's your prayer & some of the baddest BYG sides including dave burrell's echo & archie shepp's yasmina, a black woman. this was also issued in the BYG actuel series (no. 50) with the same title, but the america edition is actually the 1st/earliest. it's a trio date comprised of four jones originals including "sad eyes," later recorded by david s. ware for his DIW album flight of i. bassist beb guerin & drummer claude delcloo play fantastically, & jones is a veritable revelation, blowing ballads & burning free jazz with equal gusto & prowess. from the ESL liner notes (different notes from BYG edition): "he has been influenced by hilton jefferson, johnny hodges, charlie parker & ornette coleman & has an extremely fast phrasing. he is able to express a very romantic feeling in spite of a very "hot" tone gotten from the musicians of the elder generation." jones was greatly admired among his peers. i recall hearing that he died homeless in the early 2000s.
