Cold Spring Harbor fue el primer álbum de Billy Joel como solista, y fue lanzado el 1 de noviembre de 1971. Anteriormente había tenido otros discos como miembro de otras bandas "The Hassles" y "Attila", pero este fue su primer esfuerzo como solista. Fue liberado por Family Productions

Joel grabó este álbum principalmente para mostrar sus habilidades como compositor, con la intención de comercializar sus canciones a otros artistas: como resultado, la producción de este álbum está en la línea de otros cantautores. Actos de rock suave de la época. Parece que se han lanzado cuatro singles de este álbum: She's Got A Way, Tomorrow Is Today, Why Judy Why y Nocturne.
