and, a link to my other TV Memorabilia on ebay: items in TV MEMORABILIA store on eBay +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THIS IS A 78 RPM PHONO RECORD AND NOT A BOOK! I HAVE LISTED UNDER BOOKS ONLY BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A CLASSIC KID'S STORY! LITTLE BLACK SAMBO, from the short story by Helen Bannerman
Produced (and apparently narrated) by Bob Keeshan - later know as Captain Kangaroo - and Jack Miller
78rpm record, 10 inches wide, issued on the Bluebird Children's Record label by RCA Victor.
Artwork on sleeve reverts to the story's original setting in India rather than using the stereotypical African-American motif that became so identified with this story over the last 100 years or so.
This was also issued in a 45rpm version. I'm not sure if there is a priority to the issues - during the early 1950s, LOTS of records were issued simultaneously on 45rpm and on 78rpm. I do suspect since the 78rpm record was, by then, quickly dying out as a viable recording format, that the 45rpm version is much more common that my 78rpm version.
Vinyl (or other "unbreakable" plastic - NOT SHELLAC!) record is bright with a few rubbings and finger smudges but scratches are insignificant; label shows rubbing at the spindle hole where record was probably played a dozen times or so. Original jacket is bright and complete but does show some modest wear and rubbing. Plays well. Absolutely no skips, needle-drops or cracks. Label scan, because it is really "focused," probably shows up some faint dust particles on the scanner bed - the record is clean.
