Description
JOE ALEXANDER AND THE CUBANS - Oh Maria b/w I Hope These Words Will Find You Well Ballad Records (cat# 1008) Original 1954 Pressing 1st RECORDING OF CHUCK BERRY
This is a beautiful 45, it's a very rare copy of Chuck Berry's 1st recording done in St. Louis on August 13th, 1954 with Joe Alexander and the Cubans. In the late 80's, the old session protocols of Oscar Washington's Ballad label were found and the name Chuck Berryn was listed as the guitarist for the session that produced this Joe Alexander and the Cubans single. At this time Chuck Berry was using the pseudonym Chuck Berryn on contracts and in performances around St. Louis area to avoid embarassing his father who was a deacon at the Antioch Baptist Church. Although Berry would prefer that his own Maybellene was known as his first recording, it's documented and well-known that this was it - if you are in doubt, have a listen to the audio sample of Oh Maria and your ears will tell you that the guitar work on this record is unmistakably his. The record is in great shape with some very minor surface scratches and the labels look fantastic - the only flaws are some small manufacturing bumps. Please have a listen to the sound sample and have a look at the photos!
