JOHNNY HARTMAN * The Voice that is! *    Der voluminöse Bariton von Johnny Hartman hat viele Bigbands der Vierziger und Fünfziger Jahre bereichert, die von Dizzy Gillespie und Eroll Garner mit inbegriffen. In den Sechzigern hat er aber dann auch viele hervorragende Alben als Leader von kleinen All-Star Bands aufgenommen. "The Voice That Is" ist ein außergewöhnliches Beispiel dieses wunderbaren Talents, obwohl die Platte nie so bekannt wurde wie einige seiner anderen Veröffentlichungen.
Diese Aufnahme ist beispielhaft arrangiert und hebt Johnny Hartmans gehaltvolle Stimme in besonderer Weise hervor. Sie ist vielleicht nicht so jazzig wie manche andere von ihm, aber indem er sich mehr dem populären Stil zuneigt, scheint er das Beste zu geben, was er geben kann.
The lush baritone voice of Johnny Hartman enriched many big bands in the Forties and Fifties including Dizzy Gillespie's and Eroll Garner's. But in the Sixties he recorded many fine albums as leader and with all-star small groups. Although not as popular as some of his other releases, "The Voice That Is" is an exceptional showcase of his beautiful talent.
This recording is a wonderfully arranged and supportive showcase for Johnny Hartman's rich and full voice. It may not be as jazzy as some of his recordings, but leaning towards the popular style seems to bring out the best he has to offer.
