Led Zepplin: Houses of the Holy. 1973 1st Original Press A2 / B2.
History
Being a heavy rock fan I bought this Led Zepplin LP in 1973 when it first appeared in the shops. I didn’t like it after all. It went to the back of the cupboard, I played it again several years later I still didn’t like it, so It was banished to the loft along with some other vinyl’s I wasn’t keen on. So this LP has been in a dark dry loft for about 25 years.
I don’t profess to be an expert but having decided to sell this LP I looked it up on the internet and I believe it’s an original 1st press as it has no warner logo on the label, It has superhype credits at the bottom of the label and it seems to have all 1st press indicators, Atlantic matrix: K50014 A2 / B2, and STERLING RL stamped into the dead wax on both sides.
General Description
Released in the UK in 1973, this is the album ‘Houses of the Holy’ by the legendary Led Zeppelin. Released on Atlantic records, cat. No. K 50014, original pressing matrix numbers A2 / B2, un-laminated gatefold sleeve (without obi) with a textured lyric printed inner sleeve. The sleeve is crease free with some light shelf wear, light bottom edge wear, no top edge wear, light corner wear and is in near excellent condition. The inner sleeve is virtually crease free with no edge or corner wear and is in excellent condition. The record is clean, with clean feint spindle mark labels and plays in excellent condition.
The Sleeve.
The Sleeve is in excellent condition. There are a couple of small indents on the front and rear of the sleeve which are not noticeable unless you look at an angle. There is only slight rubbing to the front. There are no lines next to the spine, none either along the top and bottom edges. The top edge has the entire orange colour fully running unblemished from corner to corner with just a bit of wear showing on the right tip ends. The bottom edge is very similar with just a few light white rub marks at the corners. As this cover has been kept mainly in the dark the spine has no colour loss whatsoever and matches the colour of the front and back. The opening edge has slight wear and light fraying. The rear surface is every bit as good as the rest of the sleeve. Opening the gatefold reveals a deep rich blue surface that shows minimal rubbing and some near invisible lines to the left hand side.
The inner sleeve is made from strong paper. It is pressed up by Macneil press limited. There is no thumb notch along the top edge of the inner. It’s the original issue sleeve. The front and rear surfaces are flat and clean and have no creases or crease lines. The inner sleeve has spent its life inside the outer sleeve which has protected it. The inner sleeve has been looked after from new and has remained completely undamaged. There is just the barest touch of very light ageing to the edges. There are no rips, writing or stickers and it's worth pointing out that there is only the very slightest of record shape on the sleeve.
The printing states: 1973 WEA Records Ltd. All titles published by Superhype publishing/Warner Bros. Music Ltd. K50014 Stereo. Printed in England by MacNeil Press Ltd.
The records Labels are green and orange. The label does not have the Warner logo on it.
The label also carries the superhype credits at the foot of the label. Later presses just had warner credits. I believe this is a proper first issue set.
The green and orange colours are in mint condition except for a small bubbled patch near the Atlantic box on side one (See Photo). Both colours are rich and vibrant, and the white band is still white and not soiled at all. The black typeface is un-rubbed and perfectly legible.
There are several spider lines next to the spindle hole obviously caused by me playing the record; this LP has not been near a turntable in 25 years.
The vinyl
The vinyl is in excellent condition. There are just a few wispy hairlines, and a couple of fine handling lines.
Playing the record
Please note that as I do not own a turntable I have not tested this LP, but I can say that the last time it was played it was of good quality and it played superbly all the way through both sides. Please consider this as I will not accept returns.
