"Saturday Satan, Sunday Saint" was the title track of Ernest Tubb's 1969 album, and is considered to be one of his late career classics. And, it's a song that has stood the test of time. Today, 50 years later, quite a number of young and upcoming country singers have re-discovered it and been inspired to record their own version.

It's simply a timeless song, shining a spotlight on hypocrites who hide behind a religious facade.

It was written by the legendary Wayne Walker, known for his prodigious output of high-quality country songs, as well as for being a performer himself. Though only moderately successful as a Rockabilly singer, his work has been re-evaluated by fans of that genre, particularly in Europe, and he is now considered one of its greatest performers.

Wayne Walker was also the son-in-law of Ernest Tubb.

What I am offering here is the song's original demo recording, produced at the famous Cedarwood Studios in Nashville, a record that probably hasn't been heard since it was recorded, laying forgotten in the record library of a radio station that changed format from pop to country in 1962.

And, not just any country station. It was station KFDI in Wichita, Kansas, the famous "Radio Ranch" which was founded by Mack Sanders, Mike Lynch and Mike Oatman and built into the most successful Country operation in the nation: Great Empire Broadcasting.

The dealer I acquired this from had about a thousand 78rpm records that came from KFDI and I looked through  them all -- all 1950s era pop, big band, jazz, very few country. NONE were from the mid-60s. The station went country big time around 1962 and in 1964 the station's manager and eventual co-owner Mike Oatman was still begging for country records in Billboard.

My guess is that this 1967 demo got into the hands of one of the big guys who owned and operated KFDI and got mixed in with all the 1950s non-country 78s that they were probably still holding, even though they had gone all-country a few years before.

Think about it. It was a 10" record that had a small hole, just like all those 78s. Perfect disguise. And, the song titles are all wrong..."Saturday Satin" is what was typed.

It is interesting to note that Wayne Walker wrote "Saturday Satan" in 1963, and the two songs on the other side were co-written by him and Bobby Sykes in 1967.

Considering that Walker was known for writing songs at a crazy breakneck pace, and having demos cut just as fast, it is possible that the "Saturday Satan" demo actually dates from 1964 -- it was copyrighted the last day of 1963.

I did not do an exhaustive search to see if "You Better Shake Your New Love Affair" and "My Moment of Glory" were ever recorded by anybody, but did not find evidence either ever was.

A unique opportunity. Certainly a worthy addition to even the most advanced collection of country music, one  that is unlikely to surface again anytime soon.
