RATED 4**** out of 5 STARS in the AMG!! The House Arranger for BLUE NOTE, IKE QUEBEC -- recorded another session that shines in the Archives of Rudy Van Gelder's craft: BLUE NOTE BLP 4105 -- IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING -- Original issue -- Mono New York USA Labels with the ear, and RVG on both sides of the trail-out

_____ _____Working with the same quartet that he cut BLUE NOTE's -Heavy Soul- session with, organist Freddie Roach was ready with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Al Harewood. And Ike Quebec recorded another winning hard bop album. With -It Might As Well Be Spring- in many ways, the record is a companion piece to Heavy Soul. Since the two albums were recorded so close together, it's not surprising that there a number of stylistic similarities, yet with so many subtle differences to savor. The main distinction between the two dates is that, -It Might As Well Be Spring- is a date with relaxed romantic sentiment that's comprised of classic standards. It provides Quebec with ample opportunity to showcase his rich, lyrical ballad style, and he shines throughout the album with his masculine, yet round tone.
_____Similarly, Roach has a tasteful, understated technique, whether he's soloing or providing support for Quebec. The pair have a terrific, sympathetic interplay that makes -It Might As Well Be Spring- a joyous listen. -- AMG
