signed MAN [Deke Leonard +3]

"What A Night" / "Last Birthday Party"

superrare 7" PS Germany 1984 - Rock On Records  Roc 111220-6

signed by the full 2nd proper incarnation of the classic Welsh "Man" band:

Micky Jones / guitars, vocals
Deke Leonard / guitars, vocals
Martin Ace / bass, vocals
John Weathers / drums, vocals

- the same band that released the 1992 studio lp 8 years later: "The Twang Dynasty" [see progarchives [dot] com

"Jones, Leonard and Ace were joined in their quest by ‘new boy’ John Weathers, well known to them through membership of The Eyes Of Blue. Fresh from success with Gentle Giant, he replaced Terry Williams, who had moved on via Dave Edmunds’ Rockpile to assume the Dire Straits drumstool.

Man’s second incarnation would last over three decades. Yet, for all their efforts, Man struggled to regain any semblance of their former status. Martin Ace, who steers their fortunes today, thinks that fans should consider themselves lucky the band lasted at all. “The idea was we were going to do a tour of Finland, get a bit of money and go our separate ways. We were all skint.

“If we’d been serious about getting back together, the first thing we should have done was make a record… The first recording that came out after that was Live At The Marquee (original title Friday 13th), but after that, what was it? The Twang Dynasty a couple of years [sic] later. Mad, but that’s how it was.”

The album Ace refers to was actually released by indie label Road Goes On Forever some nine years later, produced by Pete Ker, the songwriter behind Arthur Brown’s Fire. It included at least one classic in The Wings Of Mercury, inspired by the death of John Cipollina three years earlier. (Some of the other tracks were re-recorded versions of songs originally cut in Germany in 1983 for an album that never saw the light of day due to Man falling out with the Hamburg businessman who funded the venture. A single, What A Night/Last Birthday Party, was the only music that escaped.)" - from "Record Collector mag: "The Ascent of Man"
