This super-rare 5 CD boxed set chronicling 20 years of the Contemporary Music Festival held in Metz, France - indisputably one of the great musical centers in Europe, was originally released in 1991, followed by a 6th volume released separately a year later. Both went promptly out of print, as they have remained with all the unique performances they contained, until now. For some of these works, this set represents the only time they have ever been recorded at all. Heavy-hitters like Feldman, Boulez, Serocki, Ligeti, Cage, Nono, Kagel, Maderna and Xenakis are included alongside less-frequently recorded artists, some of whom have provided real gems that you do not want to miss. The great music of the late 20th century demands your ears! The works are diverse in instrumentation (for orchestra, solo organ, string quartet, chorus, tape, etc.), technique, and spirit. Yet despite its diversity, themes will emerge: it is a compelling document of a particular era and attitude. The late 1970's and 1980's meant so much more than minimalism.
