STANLEY COWELL: Regeneration. Used Strata East LP gatefold vintage pressing (not a reissue) in Near Mint/Near Mint condition; Strata East Catalog # SES 19765; 1976. “Secret” appearance by Natalie Cole
Condition: Vinyl features exceptionally quiet surfaces. LP jacket has no real defects.
Behind the Music: This album was issued as “Regeneration featuring Stanley Cowell,” but is considered Mr. Cowell’s project. This record was meant to bridge traditional African music forms with the modern age, as the late Mr. Cowell’s synthesizer work is prominent on the opening selection, “Trying to Find a Way.” Various traditional African percussion instruments become ubiquitous from that point on. Natalie Cole sings on all three selections on Side B, disguised (for contractual reasons) as ‘Kareema.’ I had heard this, as a rumor, from Boston Jazz radio personality the late Eric Jackson. When I got to interview Stanley Cowell for radio in 1990, I asked him to confirm the rumor. His reply was to effect that “Yes, it was Natalie Cole, but don’t ask me to say that in a court of law”! When I played this album for first time in ages, the final cut—“Lullabye”—actually moved me to tears it is so gorgeous. And I don’t cry all that easily. It would not be hyperbole to declare this cut alone makes the whole album worth owning. And that statement is “for the record,” pardon the wordplay.
Strata East was formed as a musician collective/independent record label. Sad to say, 40+ years into the age of compact disc, only part of the label’s catalog has been reissued in digital format. Bassist/composer Bill Lee, father of Spike, was a founding member of this community and appears on this project. Stanley Cowell was also a leading member of Strata East operations.
