12 HOT JAZZ 78's, All in BRIAN RUST -- Bix, Whiteman, Teschemacher, Red Nichols

This lot contains twelve 10-inch 78 RPM records and their sleeves, all in the "hot jazz" genre, as evidenced by the fact that at least one side of each one is included in Brian Rust's Hot Jazz Discography "Jazz Records 1897-1942." In the list below, the comments (in parentheses) below include information from that Discography. If I have any specific comments about the record's condition, they will also be in the parentheses.

The first picture above was an attempt to get them all in a single group shot, then I turned them over and shot them in smaller groups for the remaining pictures. The first four, all on the Victor label, are shown in pictures 2 through 5, and they are:

Victor 19001 -- "Who Did You Fool After All?" and "Rose of the Rio Grande" by the Virginians. (Both recorded in 1922.) 

Victor 18946 -- "Chicago" by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra; and "Early in the Morning Blues" by the Virginians. (The Paul Whiteman side, which goes click-click-click in the middle, possibly due to a needle dig, is NOT included in the Rust discography. The other side was recorded in 1922.)

Victor 22304 -- "We Love Us" by the Coon-Sanders Orchestra; and "Talk of the Town" by Ted Weems and his Orchestra. (Both were recorded in 1929. the record has about a 1-inch hairline crack at the end, causing a lot of clicking at the start.)

The fourth Victor is pictured separately due to the defect described below. It is Victor 21214, "Ramona" and "Lonely Melody", by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. ("Ramona" is not included in the Rust discography, and it has some very audible background noise associated with the white glue-like substance shown in picture 5. "Lonely Melody" was recorded in 1928, and the band members included Henry Busse, Bix Beiderbecke and Jimmy Dorsey.)

The next four (pictures 6 through 10) are all on the Brunswick label:

Brunswick 80005 -- "The Sheik of Araby" and "Shim-me-sha-Wobble" by Red Nichols  and his Five Pennies. (Both were recorded in 1930, and originally issued on Brunswick 4877. Band members include Charlie Teagarden, Jack Teagarden, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.)

Brunswick 80065 -- "Copenhagen" and "Prince of Wails" by Frank Teschemacher with Elmer Schoebel's Friar Society Orchestra. (Both were recorded in 1929, and originally issued on Brunswick 4652. I hadn't realized it when I took the group shots, but this has a large chunk missing from the outer edge, as shown separately in picture 8. Yes, there is quite a bit of music missing, and be careful how you lower the needle.)

Brunswick 80004 -- "China Boy" and "Peg o' My Heart" by Red Nichols  and his Five Pennies. (Both were recorded in 1930, and originally issued on Brunswick 4877. Band members include Charlie Teagarden, Jack Teagarden, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.)

Brunswick 80064 -- "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" by Frank Teschemacher with the Chicago Rhythm Kings; and "Trying to Stop My Crying" by Frank Teschemacher with Joe "Wingy" Manone's Club Royale Orchestra. (The former, recorded in 1928 and listed by Brian Rust as "rejected" by Vocalion, is labeled as "previously unissued." Band members included Mezz Mezzrow, Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon and Red McKenzie. The other side was also recorded in 1928, and originally issued on Vocalion 15797.)

And now the last four, in pictures 9 through 12:

Perfect 6-02-01 -- "Don't Give Up the Ship" and "Twenty-Four Hours a Day" by Chick Bullock and his Levee Loungers. (This one only grades at VG, with a lot more surface wear than most of the others. Both sides were recorded in 1935.)

Columbia A2857 -- "Wond'ring" by the Ted Lewis Jazz Band; and "You Can't Get Lovin' Where There Ain't Any Love" by the Louisiana Five Jazz Orchestra. (This one also only grades at VG, with a lot more surface wear than most of the others. The former is not listed by Brian Rust. The other side was recorded in 1919, making this the oldest one in the group.)

Banner 6-09-01 -- "Empty Saddles" and "I'm an Old Cowhand" by Chick Bullock. (Both sides were recorded in 1936. Brian Rust suggests that the musicians on the former included both Bunny Berigan and Artie Shaw.)

Vocalion 5032 -- "Put That Down in Writing" and "Alla en El Rancho Grande" by Chick Bullock and his Levee Loungers. (Both sides were recorded in 1939.)

They come with the paper sleeves shown in the pictures, which don't add anything to the value of the lot. Although a few are in somewhat functional condition, most have at least some tearing and creasing and partial or total edge slits.

The records could all use a good cleaning, but - unless specifically noted above - they otherwise look to be in about VG+ condition, still nice and shiny, and with not a lot of significant surface wear. I've played all the records on my Audio-Technica turntable, and (again, unless specifically noted above) they play through without jumping or repeating, with mostly only light background noise. Because of variations in tracking ability and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment. Some of the labels may have stickers on them, but I can't remember which ones, so please look carefully at the pictures.

We prefer e-mail communications that come directly from your e-mail address to ours, with a simple subject line that states the item number and a brief description. If you don't e-mail us directly, please don't blame us if you don't get a response from us. The clever one-click eBay contact systems (like "Ask Seller a Question") frequently end up in our spam filter, or we delete them because (surprise, surprise) they look exactly like spoofs. Use of the eBay click-and-send features also increases the likelihood that our replies to you will end up in your spam filter -- if you avoid direct contact with us, we won't be in your address book. And, if you need more reasons for not using the eBay buttons, the messages that do reach us lack clear and concise headers indicating who the e-mail is from or what it's about. It's tough to sort our mail when everything is from eBay. In fact it's akin to sorting M&M's alphabetically. PAYPAL: Let us preface this by saying that Paypal has never been our preferred method of payment, but we realize it is now basically the only form of payment that eBay allows. For international orders, therefore, we now accept payment only by Paypal, unless you initiate some other form of payment that we agree to in advance. Repeat, in advance, please.
