13th Floor Elevators - "Bull Of The Woods" - IA-LP 9. A truly fabulous GUARANTEED ORIGINAL 1968 US FIRST PRESSING International Artists LP , featuring 11-tracks of pure acid psychedelia. Up for grabs here is a rare original 1st pressing of the 4th LP released by the seminal Texas 60's psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators titled "Bull Of The Woods". This is a very rare original 1968 heavy 1st vinyl pressing, it's not one of those flimsy lightweight copies that were pressed in the 70's which turn up from time to time.  The record is in beautiful condition and as stated above is NOT one of the later 70's reissues that are much more common. Released on International Artists Producing Corp. catalogue number IA-LP 9 Stereo. The sleeve is in excellent condition. The vinyl has not been played more than a handful of times and is in beautiful shape with only some very feint wispy traces which don't affect the playback at all. This legendary and magnificent album will be of major interest to psych rock fans and is a 'must have' for any serious collector of the psychedelic genre.

The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin which existed through the years 1965-1969. During their career, the band released a bunch of 45s and four highly influential psychedelic rock LPs on the International Artists record label. Featuring the yelping vocals and visionary, occasionally demented lyrics of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the original acid rock bands. Formed in Texas in the mid-'60s, the Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with "You're Gonna Miss Me". While Erickson's loopy persona and Tommy Hall's odd "jug" percussion were the band's most distinguishing features, several members of the group's original line-up contributed strong material to their albums. Although their albums sometimes wander off into a cloudy haze, they also include sturdy folk-rock tunes and driving psychedelic rockers. Trips to San Francisco established the group as an up-and-coming underground favourite, but Erickson's problems with drugs and the police led to the singer's commission to a state mental hospital in the late '60s, an ordeal from which he has never fully recovered. All of their original vinyl releases for the legendary International Artists label are highly sought after and rightly revered among psychedelic collectors.  As one of the first truly psychedelic bands, their contemporary influence has been acknowledged by 1960s musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Peter Albin of Big Brother And The Holding Company, and Chris Gerniottis of Zakary Thaks. Their debut 45 "You're Gonna Miss Me", a national Billboard #55 hit in 1966, was featured on the 1972 compilation "Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era,1965-1968", which is considered vital in the history of garage rock and the development of punk rock. Seminal punk band Television played their "Fire Engine" live in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s-90s, the 13th Floor Elevators influenced important bands such as Primal Scream and Spacemen 3, both of whom covered their songs.

Bull of the Woods was the 13th Floor Elevators' last album on which they worked as a group, and despite Roky Erickson's drug and law problems, it is a truly remarkable album, noted for its moody, dreamy, fuzzed-out psychedelic sound. It featured not only the 1967 line-up of Roky Erickson, Stacy Sutherland, Tommy Hall, Danny Thomas, and Dan Galindo, but also Ronnie Leatherman (brought in to fill in a few tracks on bass). It is an album that was largely in part the effort of guitarist Stacy Sutherland, carrying the weight of the song writing credits (five tracks, co-writing a further four with Tommy Hall), and swinging his guitar through multiple uses of delay that dissolve and scatter within the free-wheeling looseness of this album. At one time it was an incomplete album tentatively titled, The Beauty And The Beast. It was released after the group's demise by its record label International Artists late in 1968. May the Circle Remain Unbroken is noted for being one of the most haunting songs ever produced in rock. It is like an elegy for the group, and the ending of an era. The song Street Song has an energy and vitality which was ahead of its time, and gives an intimation of a direction rock might have taken if the commercial forces of corporate marketability, and strict radio guidelines had not become overwhelming as the 70's loomed.

13th Floor Elevators were purely magical, bizzare, scary & spooky, dark yet uplifting at the same time. Very hard to describe! They were SO different from the more known bands at the time. More chance taking and experimental. I can only compare them to Arthur Lee's Love as being so different, not that they sound like Love but how Love was so experimental. Also of note is The Red Krayola, The Deep & We The People other psychedelic experimental bands from the 60's. This album rolls along with majestic power, great beat, melody, mood & unique psychedelica. Just listen to "Till Then" and "Dear Dr. Doom". Awesome and fabulous psychedelic rock — "Never Another" is the Elevators at their demented best and the closing track "May the Circle Remain Unbroken" with it's wads and wads of reverb,maybe the strangest song the band ever recorded and is to Erickson what "Jug Band Blues" is to Syd Barrett! The first track, "Livin' On", comes at you like psychedelic rollin' thunder, with a heavy, well-timed drum and a spanglingly proficient guitar backdrop. It's all up, up and away from there on. True, classic hallucinogenic tunes, played like you dreamed about long before you ever knew what you were gonna be when you grew up. The Elevators' Texan roots are reflected in the 'Gulf' sound, the immaculate guitars and dark but spiritual vocals of singer Roky Erickson. The songs are all of a mythical quality, each one embroidering a rich vein of human and godlike enchantment on the senses. If there were ever to be a Great Pyramid of music, then "Bull Of The Woods" is it! It's bluesy, spiritual, heavy, psychedelia. Not for amateurs, but definitely for anyone with a real appreciation for good music, whatever the genre. One of the best albums from the golden 1960s and without doubt in the higher echelon of psychedelic albums. For me, this one says it all. If anything, BULL has the weirdest songs and trippiest-sounding production of the three 13th Floor Elevators studio albums. Ghostly background vocals, bizarre horn arrangements (yes, horns!) and somberly mystical lyrics make this album a must-own for connoisseurs of the psychedelic genre. The audio quality is pretty thin, but oddly enough, the grungy sound seems to work perfectly with these songs, producing a proto-Flying Saucer Attack effect. If you own the first two Elevators LPs (and you really should if you are serious about psych rock), don't hesitate to grab this magnificent album. You will not be disappointed!!

A true must-have 60's underground LP.
