Description
You are bidding on five 16-inch vinyl radio broadcast transcriptions, 33 1/3 rpm, microgroove, containing AFRTS recordings of 2 1/2 hours of the First Playboy Jazz Festival as aired August 7-9, 1959. This now legendary Playboy Jazz Festival was held at the Chicago Stadium, with an audience of 68,000, and was considered one of the largest festivals back then. The music was Dixieland, swing and bop. The three-day festival included commentary and performances by Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and others. On the reverse of each of the five discs are programs from the AFRTS radio series POLKA PARTY, each 30 minutes. The discs are in fine condition with excellent audio.
THIS IS JAZZ #1 – this live segment from the festival featured the Duke Ellington Orchestra with VIP Boogie -- Jam with Sam-- Launching Pad -- Newport Up -- Walkin' and Singin' the Blues with vocalist Lillie Greenwood, approximately 30 minutes.
THIS IS JAZZ #21 – this live segment featured J.J. Johnson, trombone -- Mysterioso / written by Thelonius Monk -- [Untitled piece] /written by J.J. Johnson -- It's Only a Paper Moon -- A Night in Tunisia /written by Dizzy Gillespie, approximately 30 minutes.
THIS IS JAZZ #22 – this live segment featured Joe Williams, vocalist; Count Basie Orchestra with Deacon -- Blue Blue Beat-- It's a Wonderful World -- When the Sun Goes Down -- Old Man River, approximately 30 minutes.
THIS IS JAZZ #23 – this live segment featured Mort Sahl, host; Chris Connor, vocalist; Sonny Rollins, saxophone; Bob Crenshaw, bass; Walter Perkins, drums; others. Songs: I Got Rhythm -- I Get Misty -- Senor Blues / written by Horace Silver -- Lover Come Back to Me -- [Untitled piece] -- Without a song -- Playboy After Dark, approximately 30 minutes.
THIS IS JAZZ #24 – this live segment featured Ella Fitzgerald, vocalist – extended version How High The Moon (wonderful scat singing, the crowd erupts); Count Basie Orchestra; Dave Brubeck Quartet – I am in a Dancing Mood; Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, vocalists; Joe Williams, vocalist – Everyday I have the Blues; June Christy, vocalist, introduced by Stan Kenton – That’s All, approximately 30 minutes.
These recordings were made live on location by the Shelton Recording Studio, Inc in cooperation with the Audiovisual Branch, Information Division, Fifth Army Headquarters.
