Beethoven – The Complete Sonatas for Piano and Cello Mstislav Rostropovich / Sviatoslav Richter Philips – 835 182/83 AY | Netherlands 1963 | 2 LP Stereo Box Original Early Philips Plum Labels / ED1
Exceptional original Philips stereo box set of Beethoven’s complete sonatas for piano and cello, performed by two giants of 20th-century music: Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter.
This is a very special collector’s copy: complete in all parts, with original Philips inner sleeves, booklet and original box. From the private archive of a Frankfurt physician who maintained a serious classical record collection. Copies in this complete and beautifully preserved state are very difficult to find.
Why this edition is special: This early Dutch Philips stereo issue from 1963 belongs to the highly collectible Philips 835 AY series and comes with the desirable original plum labels. The Rostropovich / Richter Beethoven cello sonata cycle is one of the great classic chamber music recordings of the analogue era: powerful, deeply musical, intellectually serious and emotionally rich. For many collectors, this is one of the essential Beethoven cello sonata recordings on vinyl.
Vinyl: NM (Near Mint) Unbelievably beautiful Near Mint vinyl with deep gloss and a wonderfully clean visual appearance. The records look barely played and have only the finest sleeve-related hairlines from the original paper inner sleeves.
Please note: Side 1 of 835 183 AY has one extremely fine and delicate superficial hairline. It is very light, probably caused by the edge of a paper inner sleeve, and should not cause any problem. I mention it only for full transparency.
Overall, the vinyl is truly outstanding — glossy, fresh, carefully preserved and a real joy for collectors.
Original Philips Inner Sleeves: NM (Near Mint) A remarkable and very rare detail: the original Philips inner sleeve system is present in four parts — one paper inner sleeve and one stronger outer paper sleeve for each record. All are beautifully preserved in Near Mint condition.
To find this box with the original Philips sleeves still present in this form is very uncommon and adds strongly to the collector appeal of this copy.
Booklet: NM (Near Mint) Crisp, fresh and wonderfully preserved, still with that subtle fresh print scent. Looks as if it were printed yesterday. A remarkably clean and elegant original insert.
Box: strong VG++ / close to NM Clean and structurally sound original Philips box with only minor edge wear. Visually appealing, well kept overall and clearly leaning toward Near Mint. A very attractive and dignified original box.
Provenance: From the private archive of a Frankfurt physician and serious classical music collector. The complete preservation of the box, booklet and original Philips sleeves strongly reflects careful archival ownership.
Collector’s note: A superb and highly desirable original Philips plum-label stereo box of the legendary Rostropovich / Richter Beethoven cello sonatas. Complete in all parts, beautifully preserved, with exceptional Near Mint vinyl and original Philips inner sleeves.
A genuinely special archive copy — very hard to improve upon.
