Nazz the psychedelic garage band from Philadelphia were sometimes mistakenly called "The Nazz", the group's official name on all records and press materials is simply, "Nazz", without the definite article. The band was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (lead guitar) and Carson Van Osten (bass guitar). Thom Mooney (drums, formerly of the Munchkins) and Robert "Stewkey" Antoni (vocals, keyboard) joined before their first concert, opening for the Doors in 1967.
Marketed by their manager, Michael Friedman, as a teenybopper boy band, Nazz signed with SGC Records, releasing Nazz in 1968. The album was not commercially successful and neither was the first single, "Hello It's Me". However, it contains terrific memorable power-pop/garage/psych tracks throughout -- very infectious stuff that sticks in the head. Why they were not commercially successful is the luck of the draw -- not the right promotion, etc as they had all the ingrediants. The first NUGGETS psych comp features a track from this album, " Open My Eyes", and what a cool fuzzed-up psych nugget it is! Ironically, Rundgren's biggest solo hit was an up-tempo version of Nazz' first unsuccessful single, "Hello It's Me" on this album.
Nazz took their name from the song "The Nazz are Blue" by The Yardbirds from their album Roger the Engineer.
Nazz never became mainstream rock stars, but they did achieve a measure of cult popularity among many listeners. Nazz peaked at #118 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, while single "Hello It's Me" peaked at #66 on the Pop Singles chart.

CONDITION: The Cover: Here, a hard one to find with a clean gatefold cover as it wears SO easily (being dark/black) ...this is a great gatefold, "EX" (excellent) front with M- back cover (group shot). No problems, ALL stiff and solid. no seam splits, no bends and no writing
The Vinyl: is all shiny both sides, clear "EX" (excellent) to M- TOP clean and expect it to play top level with NO audio problems...the labels are clean...
