The name of Herbie Goins may not be as well-known as that of his UK-based black contemporaries, Geno Washington or Jimmy James, but I know who's records I'd rather own, particularly "No. 1 In Your Heart", on an original Parlophone demo. It could very well have been a contender for the best UK-recorded soul title of all time, had Ray Merrell's "Tears Of Joy" not already taken that honour. The san of an original example shown below was snaffled from another site on the web.

Like Geno Washington (but not Jamaican-born Jimmy James), Herbie Goins was an American, who first came to the UK with the U.S. armed forces. The thriving London R&B scene of the early 60s drew many of his peers, and H.G. became a featured vocalist with Alexis Korner's group, Blues Incorporated, in 1964. He sang lead on several tracks from the "Red Hot From Alex" album, including "Woke Up This Morning", "Stormy Monday", "It's Happening", and "Haitian Fight Song". He then replaced Ronnie Jones as front-man with The Night-Timers, and sang on all three of their 45s, as well as their only album - all released via Parlophone. They are now all exceedingly collectable, but it's "No. 1 In Your Heart" that everybody wants. Herbie later moved to Italy.

"No. 1 In Your Heart" was writen by the team of Clyde Wilson and Wilbur Jackson, and had been recorded a little earlier by The Monitors. It was released by Motown on it's V.I.P. subsidiary, in February 1966, but wasn't singled out for a UK outing (no singles by The Monitors were, until they became The New Monitors). The stage was thereforre set for a UK cover version, and it took just took five months for the Herbie Goins & The Night-Timers' version to appear in the shops. It became a 60s club classic, and has more recently attracted very high prices on lists. Manship's 2005 quote of £200 for a demo is now probably half the value, such is the rising power of eBay. Only last week Timi Yuro's "It'll Never Be Over For Me" sold for a staggering amount - over twice the guide price.

Fortunately for those without bottomless pockets, this facsimile reissue came out about the same time as Manship's outdated UK guide, along with a lot of UK mod collectables. Most of these reissues were given tell-tale large centres, but a few (such as The Quik) appeared with solid centres. Assuming that they were all from the same source, it's unfortunate that this Herbie Goins single wasn't among the latter group, but that's life.

Both sides have full youtube postings (not taken from the sale copy).

The record is in almost mint condition, and both sides play like new.

Both labels are immaculate.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
