As seen Label and Record show well. Few needle marks area of title
No cracks, scratches on play surface.
Unlike other Ebay record sellers that only offer you a visual grading, I play each and every record
I try to give a numeric grading on a scale from 1-10 as to the sound quality of each disc.. Keep in mind that since I am not a record collector and these records are well over 100 years old. My grading may differ from serious collectors but I do take returns if successful buyers are not happy with their purchase..
Very Early disc # A365 ,,, 7" VICTOR RECORD WITH Eldridge R. Johnson still on the label as the registered trademark. Dated 10/6/1900
Very desirable tune "Hail To The Spirit of Liberty" nearly 120 years old..
This is a single sided record that has good volume and plays through smoothly without any issues on my wood horn Victor D phonograph using a fiber needle in a #2 reproducer. There is some very light background noise during play but not very noticeable to my ear. I'm not a record collector but I would easily give it an overall rating of 8.5 out of 10 due to the sound quality which is above average. Grooves are in extremely nice condition as I tried to show in the photo's..
From what I have seen on the internet,, it appears this US label was only produced a short time in 1900/1901 by Eldridge R. Johnson who's parent company was the Consolidated Talking Machine Company of Philadelphia and preceded the Victor Talking Machine Co. Supposedly Eldridge Johnson came up with a superior way in which to reproduce multiple copies of quality records from a single master.
Initially Eldridge Johnson's records carried the label Improved Gram-O-Phone Record the first records ever to carry a paper label but within a few months, through a court injunction, he was prohibited from using the term Gram-O-Phone on the labels of any of his records. For a couple months, just the IMPROVED RECORD label remained followed by this, the very first production of the VICTOR RECORD label. **(the Victor Talking Machine Company had yet to be formed). As you can see on the label, Eldridge Johnson name is still listed on the label making this a Pre Dog record.
From what I understand, the Victor Taking Machine Company with it's trademark nipper dog did not evolve until Johnson relocated his company to New Jersey..
This recording is TAKE #4 which can easily be seen etched into the right side in the run out area..
According to the research site Discography of American Historical Recording's (DAHR), the listed date for this record is 10/06/00. See the last attached picture for this documentation..
