Description

I bought this record new and sealed in 1971 from an import shop in Melbourne, I taped it when I got it and it has only been played a dozen or so times since then, most recently just before listing it. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, but there are some minor scuffs from being taken in and out of the cover. Both sides play loud and clear with only some low level surface noise on the run in and run out tracks and between the tracks, masked when the music is playing. Both labels are clean, no writing or stickers.(VG). The matrix runout for side A is AS 9191-A  LW and for side B is AS 9191-B  LW both etched in the dead wax.  The cover is a heavy cardboard gate fold, with a glossy front and back. The cover is still rigid, no splits or creases, and the spine is still intact and rigid and can easily be read in the shelf. There are signs of wear in the laminate if held at an angle to the light and there are a couple of marks on the back cover towards the top just to the right of centre (see Photo 2). The inside of the gate fold is clean, no writing or stickers, however there is some yellowing along the top and down the edge of the opening, from years of storage, and a couple of faint spots on the left hand side also from years of storage. (see photos 7 & 8). Because of these marks I have graded the cover G++.  Recorded in 1969, this was the last album recorded by Albert Ayler for Impulse and released before his death in November 1970, other tracks from this session were released posthumously on "The Last Album" issued in 1971. The tracks on this album are a departure from the pure free jazz style that defined Ayler's earlier works and three of the tracks include vocals from his girlfriend Mary Parks(listed in the personnel as Mary Maria) and on one track, "Oh Love is Life", Albert Ayler  has a vocal presence. In addition, the last track "Drudgery," a full on R&B workout, includes guitarist Henry Vestine from the blues rock group Canned Heat in the line up. Throughout Ayler's sax playing still has the passion and tone colour that set his playing apart. There are audio clips of most of these tracks on you tube if you want to hear what they sound like.
