Alvin Curran "Canti e vedute del giardino magnetico / Songs and Views from the Magnetic Garden" LP issued by the composer for his Ananda label (N° 1) in Italy, 1975. ****** Rec:ex Cov:ex ****** Though Alvin Curran have been making music for some time, "Canti e vedute del giardino magnetico" is a masterpiece that could be considered like a first piece. It marks a radical departure from the previous seven years of experimental and collective music making with the group Musica Elettronica Viva and it signals the beginning in the strenuous role of a solo performer-composer. So "Canti e vedute del giardino magnetico" is really a kind of place, a point where inner and outer needs converged: where taped "sound scenarios" from nature would be fused with live sounds in an organic whole; where vocal, brass, keyboard and synthesizer resources would be fully used; where long flowing melodies (which Curran had been storing in his head for some years) would enter into dialogues with the natural sounds, and in more complex counterpoint with themselves; where the music of found objects and simple instruments like the harmonica and the jews harp would speak for itself; finally where European and Americam experiences would meet. Encouraging were the solo works that Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Charlemagne Palestine and Simone Forti did around that time. The piece itself was put together in the winter and spring of 1973 and presented for the first time in Rome at the Teatro BEAT 72, for ten consecutive evenings. In concert "Canti e vedute del giardino magnetico" lasts about an hour and one half. Without compromising anything of the essential content of the work, Alvin Curran made a version for this record which he recorded and engineered (often while playing) by himself, using Schoeps condenser mics, an AKG D 224 (flugelhorn) and an RCA 77 DX (voice) into a mixer by Livio Argentini and a Revox A 77. Instruments heard in order of appeareance are: Synthesizer (Synthi A), Amplified cymbal, my voice with glass chimes, flugelhorn with Harmonicas and jews harps and the voice of Margherita Benetti singing an Emillian folk song. On Side 2: synthesizer with African thumb piano (Kalimba), metal chimes and corrugated plastic tubes. The principal sounds recorded in nature are wind and high tension wires in Sardegna, Swallows in Rome, bees in La Serra di Lerici, a water conduit in Rome, the Castle beach in Lerici with Edith Schloss and myself walking, and peepers (frogs) at Pulsa's Harmony ranch in Connecticut.
