Description

Jerry Cole was a hot LA session guitarist. He was a member of “The Champs” when they hit it big with “Tequila” and paid his bills as lead guitar for Phil Spector’s studio sessions. He was also part of the “The Byrds” - Mr. Tambourine Man and “The Beach Boys” - Pet Sounds. Shortly after “The Beatles released the “Sargent Pepper” album, he put together some session friends and recorded a large number of songs. He called the band “The Id” and picked out 10 songs for an album release. This album released on RCA was called “The Inner Sounds Of The Id“. Producer Paul Arnold wanted the band to debut in Chicago. Jerry thought that San Francisco was better suited to their sound, but reluctantly they traveled to Chicago and played there for three weeks. With no real album promotion, they fizzled out and flew back to LA and their lucrative session work. Meanwhile, Paul Arnold had taken all the master tapes from the “Id” sessions and disappeared. The Alshire label had been putting out about 150 orchestra records per year available in every grocery store. It’s said that to save on cost, plastic ashtrays where melted down and became the vinyl records. Since psychedelic music was all the rage, they decided to cash in. “Animated Egg” was one of the first “acid” records on the label. A wild colorful cover, but an unknown group picture. The Alshire exec’s took all the credit. Jerry Cole confirms that this music is the stolen “outakes” from the “Id” sessions. It’s obvious if you compare the two albums, but “Animated Egg” has no singing. Instead you‘ll find lots of sitar and guitar with phase shifters on kill. Alshire also re-mastered and released this album again (with strings) calling it “Astro-Sounds From Beyond the Year 2000.

The thin Cover is in EX shape with some very slight edge wear. The record plays EX throughout. Although this is not an original Alshire label issue,  I think you'll find the sound is much better in quality. The Alshire records were all scratchy sounding. This is very clean. A must have.
