This is an original 1st UK pressing in mono with a 6mm wide spine cover and original inner sleeve and cutouts. The inner sleeve has no splits, the cutouts sheet looks almost like new, and the audio is exceptional and grades as Near Mint (NM).
This has the first matrix numbers as follows:
Side one: XEX 637-1
Side two: XEX 638-1
Description
Disc: The vinyl has retained its original sheen with a handful of obvious scuffs and marks visible in normal light on side one (there is very little on side two), and additional fine hairlines, sleeve-removal lines and light surface-marks on both sides when viewed under bright, direct light, but there is nothing with any audio impact. I have played the whole album from start to finish and it sounds amazing with nothing to report. For the sake of completeness I would mention the occasional random click and a tiny bit of background noise in some of the run-ins/outs, fades, silent grooves and intros, but generally these all play really quietly and even the long fade at the end of 'Day in the Life' was good to listen to. I can't remember ever hearing an original mono pressing of Sgt Pepper sounding this good. The whole album plays superbly with no repetitive noises anywhere. I think it would be very hard to find an original copy that plays better than this. I would have no hesitation to play-grade the whole thing as Near Mint (NM). Please note that a visual grading, especially for side one, would be lower.
Labels: No stickers or writing etc, just some spindle marking. Please note that there are relatively few spindle marks on the side one label, suggesting that side two wasn't played that much. The KT tax code is on side one.
Sleeve: The gatefold sleeve has no seam splits, tears, writing, stickers etc, just some typical signs of age or use, including signs of use at the opening, wear to the corners (mainly at the top of the spine) and some minor laminate creases, mainly near the edges and spine. There is some laminate-splitting and small laminate cracks on the spine, and the spine text is partially worn on the word 'Peppers', but the spine itself is intact and solid, with just some wear at the corners.
Inner sleeve: The original red/white inner sleeve has a no splits and very few signs of use. However, the white parts have yellowed/discoloured with age.
Cutouts: No issues. Looks pretty much like new.
Detracting features not covered above: None. This is a complete example, with audio that I think would be hard to improve on.
All photographs are of the actual item for sale. Please ask any questions before you bid or buy.
Where gradings are given these are based on the UK Record Collector grading system (see below) and are visual gradings only, unless the listing specifically states that it is a play-grading.
I use the UK RECORD COLLECTOR GRADING SYSTEM. This grading system differs from some other grading systems, in particular the Goldmine grading system. Please make sure that you are familiar with the UK record collector grading system before you bid.
Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
Poor: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
Bad: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
Plus (+) or Minus (-) are added where items fall between gradings. I only ever use one plus or minus.
