Description

On offer here is a VERY RARE original mono 1963 Pye contract pressing of ‘With the Beatles’ by The Beatles.  This is much rarer than the Decca contract pressings of ‘Please please me’ and ‘With the Beatles’ from the same era.

The Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide states that this pressing turns translucent red when held up to the light, but this is not the case.  If you have an original Pye LP from the early 1960s by The Kinks, The Searchers or The Honeycombs etc and hold them up to a strong light, you will find that they do not turn translucent red.  This only applies to later Pye pressings (e.g. the Pye contract pressing of ‘The Beatles 1962-1966’ from 1973).

However, you can spot these very rare Pye pressings of ‘With The Beatles’ by checking the edges of the record and also by the unique mothers and stampers used for this pressing.  The edges of this disc are totally different to regular EMI pressings, being much sharper and flatter – see my photos and compare to regular pressings!  If you have any early 1960s Pye albums by The Kinks etc you will see the edges of this disc are the same as those Pye LPs.

The mothers and stampers in the run out groove are extremely unusual, Side 1 has at 9 o’clock ‘3’, ‘12’ and ‘PB’ and at 3 o’clock it has an ‘A’.  Side 2 has ‘2’, ‘11’ and ‘QA’ at 9 o’clock and ‘A’ at 3 o’clock.

The labels are also very slightly different on this Pye pressing with slightly raised edges and an extra ‘ridge’ discernible at the centre.

The catalogue number is PMC 1206 and it is on the original yellow and black Parlophone label with ‘The Parlophone Co Ltd’ rims and without the ‘Sold in the UK’ text.  The label for Side 2 has the correct spelling ‘You really got a hold on me’ for track 3.  The publishing credit for ‘Money’ on the label for Side 2 is ‘Dominion Belinda’.

The matrix numbers are Side 1 – XEX 447-7N and Side 2 – XEX 448-7N.  The mothers and stampers are: Side 1 – 3, 12 PB at 9 o’clock and A at 3 o’clock.  Side 2 – 2, 11, QA at 9 o’clock and A at 3 o’clock.  There is no tax code on either label or in the run-out grooves, another unusual characteristic of this pressing.

The record itself is very strictly graded in GOOD+/VG- condition with quite a few light surface marks / visible hairline scratches though it plays through without any jumps or sticks and as usual with these thick vinyl original 1960s pressings, the sound is still really nice despite some occasional light background noise, and it plays much better than it looks visually.  The record is 100% flat with no warps or dishing etc but there is a very small chip on the edge of the vinyl but this is nowhere near the playing surface, if it was not for this small chip (which does not affect play) I would probably grade the record higher.  As I say, this record plays much better than it looks visually.

The original Garrod and Lofthouse flipback laminated cover is also very strictly in VG/VG- condition with some creasing and wear plus a small stain on the rear, though there is no real major damage and this is still a very acceptable cover.  The rear cover spells Side 2 Track 3 ‘You really gotta hold on me’.

It comes with the original Emitex inner sleeve which has a small tear at the top and a small split on one side and a split at the bottom.

The labels are nice with no tears, but there is a letter N written on the Side 1 label though this is hardly visible against the black background.  There is some spindle wear, mostly on Side 2.

A VERY rare pressing to complete your Beatles collection, not in Mint condition but a very decent filler.

Bid with confidence, check my feedback.  This is another item from my extensive Beatles collection and I have been collecting Beatles records for over 40 years.
