Description
On offer here is a VERY RARE original mono 1963 Oriole / “Pye” contract pressing of ‘With The Beatles’ by The Beatles. This is much rarer than the Decca contract pressings of ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘With the Beatles’ from the same era.
Some editions of the Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide state that this pressing turns translucent red when held up to the light, but this is not the case. This only applies to later Pye (not Oriole) pressings (e.g. the Pye contract pressing of ‘The Beatles 1962-1966’ from 1973).
However, you can spot these very rare Oriole pressings of ‘With The Beatles’ by checking the edges of the record and also by the unique mothers and stampers used for this pressing. The edges of this disc are totally different to regular EMI pressings, being much sharper and flatter – see my photos and compare to regular EMI pressings!
The mothers and stampers in the run out groove are extremely unusual, Side 1 has at 9 o’clock ‘3’, ‘12’ and ‘P’ and a hand-etched X 4 and at 3 o’clock it has an ‘A’. Side 2 has ‘2’, ‘11’ and ‘PB’ at 9 o’clock and ‘A’ at 3 o’clock.
The labels are also very slightly different on this Pye pressing with slightly raised edges and an extra ‘ridge’ discernible at the centre.
The catalogue number is PMC 1206 and it is on the original yellow and black Parlophone label with ‘The Parlophone Co Ltd’ rims and without the ‘Sold in the UK’ text. The label for Side 2 has the correct spelling of ‘You really got a hold on me’ for track 3. The publishing credit for ‘Money’ on the label for Side 2 is ‘Dominion Belinda’.
The matrix numbers are Side 1 – XEX 447-7N and Side 2 – XEX 448-7N. There is no tax code on either label or in the run-out grooves, another unusual characteristic of this pressing.
The record itself is very strictly graded in really nice VG+/EX- condition a few light surface marks and 1 hairline scratch on Side 1 causing some clicks at the end of ‘Don’t Bother Me’ and the start of ‘Little Child’ though the LP plays through very well without any jumps or sticks and as usual with these thick vinyl original 1960s pressings, the sound is still really nice despite some occasional light background noise. The record is 100% flat with no warps or dishing etc.
The original Garrod and Lofthouse flipback laminated cover is also very strictly graded in VG- condition with some creasing and wear, some stains on the rear, and 2 inch splits at the top and bottom, plus some tape repair to a split at the opening. The rear cover spells Side 2 Track 3 ‘You really gotta hold on me’.
It comes with the original Emitex inner sleeve in lovely EX condition.
The labels are nice with no tears or marks. There is some spindle wear, mostly on Side 1.
A VERY rare pressing to complete your Beatles collection!
