Description
Big Bill Broonzy – "The Blues" (EmArcy, Mercury, 1958) – Original Vinyl LP
An original 1958 mono pressing on Mercury's EmArcy jazz imprint, collecting robust, full-voiced solo and small-combo blues recordings by Big Bill Broonzy. The tracks were actually cut back on November 8–9, 1951 at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago, then rediscovered in Mercury's vaults in spring 1958 and issued as this LP — Broonzy's first appearance on the format. Liner notes ("The Inside Story") are by noted writer and broadcaster Studs Terkel, with striking cover art by Fred Steffen. Engineered by Bill Putnam; supervised by Bob Shad.
Personnel: Big Bill Broonzy (vocal, guitar) throughout, joined on different sessions by Ransom Knowling (bass); and on side two by Sax Mallard and William Cassimir (saxes), Robert Call (piano), and Judge Riley (drums).
Tracklist:
- Side One: Walkin' the Lonesome Road / Mopper's Blues / Get Back / Hey, Hey / Willie Mae / Stump Blues
- Side Two: I Know She Will / Hollerin' Blues / Leavin' Day / Southbound Train / You Changed / Tomorrow
A great find for Chicago blues collectors and EmArcy/Mercury label completists — Studs Terkel's liner notes alone make this a notable piece of blues history.
