BILLIE HOLIDAY - LADY IN SATIN - Columbia CL1157- Original 6 Eye Mono Excellent

Description

Offered is an Original Mono Pressing of Lady In Satin, by Billie Holiday, on Columbia Six Eye Label CL 1157. The album marked her return to the Columbia Label after a 16 year absence, and is in Excellent condition.

This particular edition is an early pressing (with no "T.M.") at the bottom of the record labels, and no "CBS" at 12 O'Clock.

There doesn't seem to be much of a consensus about which of the early pressings is "The First" (there are over 155 editions of Lady In Satin).

Our offering here has 2 distinguishing features:

1 - On the back cover, in the lower right corner, most early pressings have an advertisement for Columbia needles (Columbia also produced sound equipment). As you can see from the photo in our Gallery - in that lower right corner position there is no reference to that, and is blank.

2 - The Inner Sleeve (also pictured in our Gallery) is the first Inner Sleeve issued by Columbia that introduced the now familiar "Walking Eye" recording series.  This Orange and White inner is sometimes refers to as the "Thousand Eye Inner Sleeve".

Most of the other early editions of CL 1157 have a different inner sleeve - one that promotes the record players and needles that Columbia was producing.

In any event, this recording was her next to last release - Wikipedia calls it her "penultimate".  It has a special place not just in Billie's life work, but also in the history of recorded music.

Do have a look at what the information in Wikipedia has to say about the production and recording of Lady In Satin.
