BYZANTIUM
The versatile British combo Byzantium made a run at mainstream success in the front half of the 1970s, releasing a trio of eclectic albums that endeared them to critics, but befuddled both the masses and the band's record label. In retrospect, the group's blend of psychedelia, progressive rock, country-rock, and West Coast pop perhaps predestined the cult status that time eventually bestowed upon them. Featuring a multi-headed staff of talented songwriters and with instrumental prowess to match, Byzantium were a vigorous live band with a strong vocal presence and plenty of technical flair that could be heard in their ambitious arrangements. After being dropped by A&M in 1973, the group persevered independently to privately record their extremely rare and highly rated third LP before finally calling it quits two years later. Byzantium's genesis can be traced back to the University College School in Hampstead, where future members Jamie Rubenstein (vocals, guitar), Nico Ramsden (vocals, guitar), Chaz Jankel (vocals, guitar), Robin Lamble (bass, vocals), and Steve Corduner (drums) were all active participants in the school's nascent late-'60s music scene. Rubenstein in particular had found some success leading a progressive pop group called Ora, who cut a record for London indie Tangerine Records in 1969. Though a key player later on, his experience with Ora left him reluctant to fully commit to a music career and by the time Byzantium officially formed in 1970, he opted to serve as an off-stage contributing songwriter with Jankel filling what would have been his live role. The group's unique sound and dynamic performances began to attract a modicum of music industry interest, and the initial quartet of Ramsden, Jankel, Lamble, and Corduner cut a handful of demos at Tangerine studios, now helmed by former Ora member turned producer Robin Sylvester...

In the last gasp of San Francisco acid rock, Tripsichord Music Box recorded an album of cheery, hippie-vibed music that was already on the verge of becoming anachronistic upon its 1970 release. It isn't bad, and not too indulgent. It's just pretty derivative, with the characteristically angular S.F. guitar lines, folk-influenced harmonies, and lyrics hopefully anticipating a new order of sunshine and possibility. Sometimes they sound like a more pop-oriented Grateful Dead, and the influence of the Airplane is also evident; most of the vocals are male, but the presence of some female singing adds some color to the mix...(AllMusic)price rating
