Last month 20th Century Collectables auctioned a wide spine mono copy of Pepper, we are pleased this month to be offering the ultra-rare wide spine stereo version.
The Beatles – Sgt.Pepper– Genuine 1967 ultra-rare WIDE SPINE STEREO 1st UK pressing with yellow & black Parlophone rim labels and ‘Sold in UK…’ label text catalogue number PCS 7027
This very early 1st UK STEREO pressing dates from on or before the initial release date of 1st June 1967.
This copy is in superb condition and has received only a few plays in its 47 year history.
What is significant about these early wide spine covers is that they contain some of the earliest Pepper records pressed, usually dating to on or around the very first day of production. This is evidenced by the very early stampers that are often present on the records found in these covers. The stampers to this record both come from the first mother and side one has one of the earliest single digit coded stampers, that of 1H.
These thick wide spine covers were, according to some sources, originally designed to accommodate an array of cardboard souvenirs which the Beatles had wanted to place into the gatefold sleeve for their fans. As production budgets escalated EMI decided to cut costs and plans to include these souvenirs were abandoned. Production then quickly switched to the narrower spine.
It is difficult to determine how many wide spine covers were produced but they were certainly produced in comparatively small numbers and would have formed part of the advanced orders pressed for the June 1st 1967 release date.

Visual: EXCELLENT
The vinyl appears virtually unmarked in strong daylight; under a halogen desklight there are various light non feelable surface marks with the occasional light hairline but certainly no scratches. The heavy duty vinyl lies 100% flat on the turntable.
Labels: MINT-
A superb set of fresh and completely unworn labels, showing very little evidence of play with only 2 or 3 faint spindle trails to each side. Side one has the KT tax code. There is no writing to either label.
Audio:EXC+ / MINT-
Very little to fault this superb sounding stereo copy. A silent intro into Sgt Pepper followed by the familiar burst of music. Undistorted audio throughout with an absolute minimum of occasional light surface noise only audible at high volume. All music signals are crisp and clear and there are no loud pops or ticks. A superb listening experience of this very early stereo pressing. The record does not jump or stick.

EXCELLENT
These early wide spine stereo covers are extremely rare and almost impossible to find in above VG condition. This is a superb and well preserved example in excellent condition. Due to the thickness of the spine (approx 9mm wide) these 1st issue covers often ended up with their spines being crushed. Only the ones which were well cared for and stored correctly had their spines preserved. The all important spine on this cover is very well preserved and in excellent+ condition.
The front panel is in excellent+ to nr mint condition, still retaining its high gloss laminate sheen. The interior gatefold is virtually mint and crackles like new when opened. The back panel still retains its high gloss laminate sheen but has some very minor damage along the top edge and some minor damage and bruising to the bottom right corner. Although not in mint condition it is however very well preserved and an excellent example.
