The Beatles – ‘Let It Be’, 1st issue UK box set. Dating to on or before the initial release date of 8th May 1970

A complete ‘PXS 1’ advanced order box set as designed by John Kosh. Contains all 7 original components.

N.B. The PXS 1 catalogue number did not appear on any part of the packaging but was for ordering purposes only.

1. Original -2U matrix 1st UK pressing. (-1U was never used)

2. Original Red Apple logo cover. (the non box set had a green Apple logo)

3. Original 164 page book with Ethan Russell photographs

4. Original slipcase.

5. Original outer tray with circular flaps.

6. Original inner tray.

7. Original inner sleeve.

In terms of the band politic, the Let It Be box set was a highly controversial release for the Beatles which in part led to their break up. Released a full six months before the non box set, fans refused en masse to buy this lavish and expensive product electing instead to wait the six months for the non box set version to be released.

It sold in very small numbers which has resulted in it becoming rare and highly collectable. The construction of the box set was also flawed and this too has led to its collectability as fewer and fewer complete examples survive. The inner tray was not adequately designed to accommodate a book of such weight and the flimsy slipcase was never substantive enough to withstand the rigours of removing the record or book from in and out of the packaging. In short the box set often came apart and the book which was poorly glued often lost its pages.

A fabulous and well preserved example which is fully intact with all of its original components.

CONDITION

Disc

Visual: Side 1 MINT-  Side 2 EXC+/MINT-

An absolute stunning looking disc of this the earliest –2U pressing, retaining all its original high gloss rainbow sheen. Side one is in remarkable condition and appears MINT in very strong daylight. Even under an unforgiving halogen desklight nothing much more is revealed other than the lightest of whispy sleeve removal marks, side one grades at near MINT but is only a whisker away from an all out MINT grade. Side two is also very impressive and on first inspection appears MINT in strong daylight, on closer examination in daylight I noticed two very tiny handling marks on track one and one other very small surface mark, they are non feelable, do not effect play, and disappear when angled away from the light. The vinyl lies 100% flat on the turntable.

Labels: Side 1 EXC+/MINT-  Side 2 EXCELLENT-

A great set of dark green Apple labels on this ultra rare -2U matrix pressing. Both spindle holes are completely unworn. On very close inspection and when angled towards the light, there are some light spindle trails visible to each side. The label on side two has some light blistering to certain areas of the perimeter edge and is graded accordingly.

Audio: MINT

This is the finest audio example of Let It Be I have ever come across. If one has an ear which has been firmly tuned to the later -3U matrix pressings, hearing a -2U pressing will come as a revelation to any audiophile. In my opinion a far superior cut than the -3U, with smoother and richer tones. The audio on this copy is stunning and is as good as vinyl gets. There is absolutely no groovewear to any of the music signals and there is no audio imperfections, just the sound of natural vinyl. I rarely give a full MINT grade for any audio but I feel on this occasion this copy deserves such a grade. It will not disappoint.

Cover – (Red Apple Logo)

MINT-

A stunning example of this ultra-rare red Apple logo cover which retains all of its high gloss laminate sheen. The slipcase has clearly served its purpose and fully protected the cover. There is no evidence of any wear to any part of the cover. The front panel is virtually flawless with just one very tiny thumbnail at the opening edge. The rear panel is also in remarkable condition with only one thumbnail visible. An astonishing example which grades at near mint. The delicate and thin spine is in pristine condition and grades at mint.

Book

EXCELLENT+

The original book appears to have been stored and untouched in its interior tray for most of its life. The front cover has just two light thumbnail creases the rear cover in much the same condition. There is a small area of storage wear to the base of the spine, other than this the spine is in pristine condition. All exposed opening edges i.e. top, bottom and front, are razer sharp. There are no missing or loose pages; moreover it appears that the book has never been read or even thumbed through. On careful inspection I didn’t detect a single page which had any evidence of creasing or having being handled. The book grades at excellent+. Collectors should bear in mind that these books which were only lightly glued fell apart almost immediately on first reading! Rare in this condition.

Slipcase

EXCELLENT-

This slipcase has survived remarkably well and is in superb condition. Both the front and rear panel have no thumbnail creasing and the structure remains uncrushed although there is evidence of a crease mark along the bottom edge.  There is some storage marks and general light wear to the corners and edges, with some light rubbing and wear to the top right hand edge on the rear panel. All in all a great example and extremely tough to find in this condition.

Outer tray

VERY GOOD+

So many ‘Let It Be’ box sets now being sold at auction have replacement outer trays with the less circular square flaps. This outer tray is positively genuine and reassuringly shows signs of age but more importantly has the rounded circular flaps. There is some wear to the edges and corners, however there is no creasing to the back panel and the retaining flaps are in great condition. The left and right exterior edges have some areas of creasing but retain a square shaped structure.

Inner tray

EXCELLENT+

An extremely well preserved inner tray in superb condition which is original to the item and positively dates to 1970.

A clean and original pristine ‘Patent no. 1,125,555’ inner sleeve.
