1st Pressing-Mono
PMC 7067 and PMC 7068
Matrix: XEX 709-1, 710-1, 711-1, 712-1
Stampers: 4GH, 2/6RG, 2GA, 1A
Audio quality from both discs is truly superb, with no appreciable deterioration, groove whitening or dulling. The surfaces have a glossy lustre and the mono mix delivers a powerful, clear sound throughout. There are no stalls or jumps.
PMC 7067: Sides 1 and 2: Both sides have light handling marks and needle lines in evidence, which do produce occasional crackle and the odd click/pop here and there but nothing too intrusive. The labels are in top condition, with just the usual collection of spindle trails around the centre. They also omit the 'An EMI Recording' text.
PMC 7068: Sides 3 and 4: This disc appears to have been played much less and displays fewer and lighter handling marks. Both sides play flawlessly throughout, with almost silent grooves between tracks. It would be difficult to improve on this fantastic copy. It also has the added attraction of a very early 1A stamper. The labels are in top condition with nothing more than spindle trails around the centre.
The top opening cover, with its first edition number, 0104098, is no better than most and looking fairly tired. It is, of course, no longer white (more cream going on beige) but on the plus side, it is completely intact and rather surprisingly, has no missing laminate from the spine, making the text perfectly legible. There are some surface marks and a little water stain in evidence.
The fragile black inner sleeves are in fair condition but both have seam splits and the odd tear here and there.
The poster/lyric sheet is in superb order and has not been taped or pinned. Totally original, identified by the 'lips' image and the Garrod and Lofthouse text, both omitted from later issues.
The photos of each band member are in near perfect condition.
All in all, a fabulous example of this rarer, mono variant.
