Description
This Black Sabbath LP “Paranoid" was released on the Vertigo label and is a rare variant A
After checking the matrix codes they confirm that this record is a definitive 1970 original UK first master pressing. The string breaks down into these distinct manufacturing details (6360011) The official UK Vertigo catalog number (2Y/1Y) Philips' internal mastering code for Side 2 and side 1.
(1) The very first lacquer cut generated from the original master tapes.
(420) The country plant code designating that it was cut and pressed at the Phonodisc Ltd. facility in the United Kingdom.
The 1Y / 2Y lacquer cuts were utilized across both the initial release and the immediate follow-up batch, this LP does not have the “Management / Jim Simpson, Big Bear, Birmingham" credit inside the gate fold sleeve. This text was quickly withdrawn due to a legal dispute. The label and vinyl are identical to a first pressing, but since the inside gatefold sleeve does not feature the Jim Simpson/Big Bear management credit, this copy is a UK 2nd Pressing (Late 1970 / Early 1971). But Because it still features the exact 1Y / 2Y first lacquer cuts stamped into the vinyl runout, it means this record was pressed using the same high-fidelity first-generation stampers as the very first batch, but packaged right after the legal dispute that forced Vertigo to pull the original management credit from the jacket.
To narrow it down to the exact variant subclass, the texture of this LP gatefold cover is a raw un-laminated cover which makes it a 2nd Pressing Variant A:
This LP is a definitive 1970 UK 2nd Pressing (Variant A), which is highly sought after by audiophiles because it retains the definitive 1Y/2Y first-cut audio fidelity on the early heavyweight vinyl stock.
The record does have some very light hairline sleeve /needle marks giving it a grading of VG+ as it does have some crackle and pops and the cover is VG+ The cover does have some wear as can be seen in the pictures. This would be is perfect for fans of Black Sabbath vinyl for collectors or just as an investment.
