The truly magnificent Sabbath debut LP in a high grade collectible condition

The Sleeve

Black Sabbath's debut LP comes in a stunning and haunting gatefold sleeve, which in most cases has been extreemly hard to obtain in anything less than shabby condition. It's non laminated surface, coupled with the fact that most copies were transported around and played to death meant that few have survived the ravages of time. On offer here a very nice example of this classic sleeve.

As mentioned it is a non laminated cover, but what is not so obvious is the destinction between original first issue sleeves and that of later ones. I am pleased to be able to offer a properly matched pair of record/sleeve combination. How do you tell? well its very simple. Inside the gatefold the original issues have the following wording regarding the copyright."copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings"

If it has anything other than this it is not a first issue sleeve.

This one is a genuine first issue.

The front surface is in excellent  condition. No bends and whilst there is a little colour loss it still retains most of the original sharpness. There are a couple of really really small lines near the spine

The Inner gatefold is a deep black colour, and a huge percentage of these sleeves suffer from major wear to this surface. This copy has a couple of faded spots, but overall not much.

I am confident that this can be graded Excellent

The Labels

The famous Vertigo spiral label is in superb NMINT condition. Hypnotic swirl design on the A side, and a white surface with both sides track listing on the other side.

The whiteness of the B side is unblemished, and the spindle hole is totally unworn.

I have examined the hole for tell tale spider lines and can find no more than a few small ones. This is great news as it means that the Lp has not only been very well handled and placed on the turntable, but also that it has had only a handful of plays in its 35 years.

The Vinyl

Great looking disc that retains all of its original sheen. No obvious handling marks on either side of the vinyl, and only under intense illumination can you make out some light whispy hairlines

The Sound

The three tests I always run on any LP I list should give the buyer a great insight into the reproduction of the record.

Distortion Test:

Pushing the volume up when playing any LP will tell you a lot about the use the LP has had. For example it will show immediately if the groove has suffered any wear through having been subjected to a worn or damaged stylus, or indeed one that was too heavy and caused wear. many people confuse background noise from scratches, and lines with distortion from groove wear. they are very different, and in my opinion I can put up with the odd bit of crackle or light pop, but the sound of a worn record is unacceptable to me. The loud volume ensures that all this is detected because the vibration of the stylus is more pronounced at higher volumes.

This LP is totally distortion free. except of course for the distortion caused by Mr Iommi's Fuzz Box enhanced guitar. The bass line would under worn conditions produce a horrible sound, but there is nothing. Clearly not only carefully handled, but very carefully played

Production Test:

Not so much of a test, but a report on the quality of the recording and the clarity of the sound.

You only have to listen to the introduction to the first track on side one which features a superb stereo enhanced thunderstorm to realise that the production on this LP is fantastic. The stereo split and speaker swapping is finely tuned and enhances the listening pleasure of this great LP. Even at it's most Bassiest the Audio clarity is superb. The Guitar effects from each channel on Sleeping Village have to be heard in all their spleandour

Unwanted Noise Test:

This concentrates on the noise in the run in groove, the linking groove between the tracks, background crackle, hisses, and pops. I wont mention jumps or sticking as I wouldn't list a record that did either. This is what you can expect to hear on your system, and along with the distortion test form the basis of my overall sound grading.

The run in groove to side one is silent and is a sure sign of things to come. Each linking groove throughout the Lp is as quiet as the next. potentially the LP would suffer in the quietest moments such as before and during the thunderstorm to track one, but it is totally noise free. No pops or clicks to be heard anywhere.

There is a little static in the last track to side one, but nothing serious and a deeper clean will probably resolve this

Side 2 starts with near silent run in groove and continues in the vein all the way through.

a great collectble and high grade offering

Easily warrants EX+

I have been selling vinyl on Ebay now for 7 years and have built up a good reputation for offering quality vinyl, and in the main this has always been Classic and Prog Rock and Pop from the early 60's through the mid 70's. I would ask that you look at my feedback if in any doubt. I always conduct 3 vital tests on any vinyl that I list, which includes Distortion, Production, and Background Noise. All of which you will find detailed in the listing. I also always offer a full refund if the purchaser is not happy.
