Description
BLACK SABBATH EARLY FIRST UK PHILIPS PRESSING BLACK SABBATH LP V06 1970
LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ
This LP is the foundation stone of heavy rock and metal.
The photographs provided are of the actual LP you are bidding on.
To the eye test the LP sleeve is unrivaled and it is easy to forget this record was actually released BEFORE other vinyl icons such as David Bowie's UK Mercury release of The Man Who Sold The World.
A rare and noteworthy early UK first pressing of Black Sabbath 1970 self-titled LP Black Sabbath - being a very beautiful early Vertigo first pressing lightly textured gatefold LP, possibly the best extant, and with all of the important and sought after first pressing identifiers.
BIOGRAPHY
This is the 1970 UK first issue 7-track STEREO LP - the earliest pressing - featuring an erroneous copyright warning inside the gatefold stating that “Copyright subsists in all Stereo recordings…”
Later pressings and reissues corrected this copyright warning to “Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings…”
The large Vertigo logo appears above the spindle hole and the wording ''Vertigo'' below the spindle hole along with the credit 'A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT' text denotes the earliest first pressing. These key identifiers are all present on this LP.
The LP is rated 4.53 / 5 on Discogs.

MATRIX
Matrix / Runout (Side A, stamped, variant 1): V0 6 1Y * 1 420 19 7 Matrix / Runout (Side B, stamped, variant 1): V0 6 1Y * 1 420 19 7
This is an undocumented early matrix pairing with a single digit (7) suffix on a first pressing not being listed on sites such as Discogs.
CONDITION
Vinyl LP remains visually strong, lustrous, VG+ with few signs of previous playing. A light surface mark on Side A takes an age to see/locate and is too minor to photograph, the LP plays through brilliantly.
This LP is highly original and has not been touched by any cleaning devices.
Both early Philips labels still crisp, black and white factory print, without any graffiti, handwriting, stickers or notable spindle marks.
There is a small overprint/misprint on the Side A Vertigo logo which is isolated so conclude is from the factory. This is a very early print run after all. There is a tiny red ink dot just above letter S on the word "Reserved" in the Philips label credits.
So this is a brilliant LP and one that is already extremely hard to find. It was released before David Bowie's Mercury UK release of The Man Who Sold The World and an early first Phillips pressing with Misprint is now just as hard to find in this condition.
Now please read on about the gatefold sleeve.
The gatefold sleeve is breathtaking, probably the best extant, a lightly textured gatefold in excellent condition, no ring wear, very minor rubbing on the open flap side, and the original Vertigo spine title credits are strong, fully intact, colorful, crisp and highly original. Please see the many large photographs provided which are of the actual LP you are bidding on.
The original 1970 MADE IN ENGLAND Vertigo "Swirl" record bag is still with the LP, it has the original anti-static liner and with only minor discoloration and glue curing down the glued edges, please refer to photographs.
The vinyl LP is stored separately in a Japanese anti-static sleeve.
Please refer to the many large photographs provided to reassure yourself of the conditions noted.
